Teaching and Learning

Our very first Space Camp USA will take place next year from 16 September to 1 October, 2020 during the Term 3 holidays.

What will you be doing on your holidays?

Simplot at Sandy

Sandringham College VCE Food Studies students have been fortunate to have had the support of Simplot Australia for the past seven years. They have had the opportunity to visit their Design and Innovation Centre in Mentone to learn firsthand about the development of a wide range of products produced by Simplot including Leggos, Birds Eye, Quorn, Edgell and John West to name a few.

This year we were the hosts and were privileged to have the Simplot Business Development Manager & Executive Chef, David White and their Senior Culinary Technologist – Design, Pam Tannourji join us. The Unit 2 Food Studies students prepared a delicious buffet lunch using Simplot products in a wide variety of creative dishes and explained their choice of ingredients individually to our guests. David and Pam were then able to speak to both Unit 2 and 4 VCE Food Studies students about Simplot Australia, the food industry, food trends, recipe development and food styling. Their delivery of information was so relevant to the VCE curriculum and inspiring to the students. Pam even treated us to a food demonstration which was fabulous.

We thank Simplot Australia for their support and look forward to continuing this valuable connection in years to come.

Learning about policy making in legal studies

Brad Rowswell, Member for Sandringham came to Sandringham College on Thursday 8 August.

Brad gave students a brief overview of his work, and then discussed the issue of the mobile phone ban in Victorian schools. Students took the opportunity to ask Brad about the ban, to give their views on it and to hear how those views could be used to shape the Policy.

Brad gave students over an hour of his time, and Greta Waterman-Witchell thanked him on behalf of year 11.

Sandringham College Learning Architecture

Over the past 18 months, teachers have been working to develop a Learning Architecture framework that specifies protocols for visible learning. This framework encompasses our Instructional Model, SAEPAR, and provides for the inclusion of High Impact Teaching Strategies. As part of this process we have been reviewing and revising curriculum, and developing learning activities to reflect 21st Century skills.

Teachers are developing differentiated activities to cater for the range of needs in each class in an effort to ‘bridge gaps’ and allow all students to access the learning. We are also reviewing the literacy and numeracy needs of each subject and planning for more focussed instruction in these areas.

In addition, we are revising our assessment rubrics. We are checking that they clearly communicate the student’s achievement level and indicate what students have to do to improve. During the next few weeks we will be organising student focus groups to obtain feedback about the clarity and the usefulness of the rubrics. We will also seek feedback from parents shortly after.
