SPACE CAMP USA 2020

On Tuesday 23 July, the College held a highly successful Space Camp Information Night, attended by almost sixty intrepid Sandringham Year 9 and 10 space pioneers and parents who braved the thunderstorms and howling rains.

Lucy Fenwick of Edu School Tours, the tour provider, presented an enthralling video of the proposed excursion, including highlights from Space Camp USA in Huntsville, Alabama, as well as exciting STEM events in San Francisco, Orlando and the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in Florida.  Lucy then took questions from interested students and their parents.

Since that night, many families have registered their interest, and have paid the initial deposit.

If you were not able to attend the Information Night, it's not too late to apply.  If you are interested, are currently in Year 9 or Year 10, and would like further information,  please contact Dr Halprin in the Innovation Centre at Holloway Rd as soon as possible.  The deposit was due by Friday 9 August, and we will assess our final numbers shortly afterwards, but if you get in quickly, you may still be eligible.

Our very first Space Camp USA will take place next year from 16 September to 1 October, 2020 during the Term 3 holidays.

What will you be doing on your holidays?

50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOON LANDING: PROJECT APOLLO VISITOR STAN ANDERSON AT SANDRINGHAM

On Wednesday 24 July, the 50th anniversary of the splashdown and culmination of Apollo 11, we were incredibly fortunate and honoured at Sandringham College to be visited by Mr Stan Anderson from California, USA.

Although Stan describes himself as "someone who was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time",  he played a crucial role in the US Apollo Program controlling a fleet of special tracking aircraft which were essential to help maintain communications between Mission Control in Houston and the Apollo astronauts in space.  Stan was involved with the program from Apollo 4 through to Apollo 14 in 1971.

Stan spoke to senior students and took their questions for almost two periods in the Theatre at Holloway Road.  Staff and students alike were enthralled as Stan regaled us with many of his exploits as the controller of a fleet of specially modified Boeing aircraft known by the acronym ARIA (Apollo Range Instrumentation Aircraft).  From a control centre at Patrick Air Force Base just south of Cape Canaveral in Florida, Stan helped to deploy these planes all around the world in order to provide complete communication coverage for the astronauts.

Stan was visiting Australia to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 in Canberra with his tracking station colleagues from Honeysuckle Creek, Tidbinbilla and other Australian tracking stations from the Apollo era.  While in Canberra Stan met with Sandringham College Physics teacher and devoted space fan, Dr Len Halprin, and offered to come and speak at the College.

Students really appreciated the opportunity to engage with one of the people intimately involved in Project Apollo, the program that landed the first men on the moon fifty years ago.

On behalf of all staff and students of the College, "Thank you, Stan!"

IS THERE A PLANET B?

During Climate Week in New York City in 2014, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, made the statement "There is no Plan B, because we do not have a Planet B”. Really?  Let’s question that proposition.

In search of a possible Planet B for humans to flourish, the STEAM Club on the Senior School campus has begun the journey to Mars.

Students have created a visual representation of their ideas, and are entering the planning phase of the project. STEAM Club members are modelling the aspects of colonising Mars.

Students work in teams on different aspects of the project, learning cross-discipline skills with the guidance of the STEAM team staff. Projects include, Mars robots, design of space-wear, growing food on Mars, modular living and more. The STEAM club is planning to visit VSSEC, (Victorian Space Science Education Centre), and Luna Park.

If any additional students are interested in joining the STEAM team, please complete the form on the Compass feed. "Is there a Planet B?"

DOGS AT SCHOOL

Sandringham College has recently developed a policy designed to explain to our community the rules and procedures we have in place in relation to dogs on school grounds.

In summary only assistance dogs are permitted on school grounds during the day.

Pet dogs and dog walkers may use the school grounds prior to 8.00am and after 5.00pm as long as Bayside City Council bylaws are followed:  Sandringham College requests that all dog walkers ensure that

1. Dogs on school grounds are on-leash outside of school hours

2. All waste is collected and disposed of in general waste bins
