Located in the Library at the Holloway Road campus, the Careers Room is open every lunchtime. Students are welcome to come around and browse resources, ask questions, or book an interview with Deb Hanlen (Year 11 & 12) or Lynne Laursen (9 & 10).
Many exciting things are happening in the Careers Department this year. Lynne Laursen has joined me in delivering the careers program across the college. All year levels will have a dedicated careers program that has been designed to either introduce or extend students’ knowledge and understanding of careers and pathways. Also, an online careers resource, Careers Tools has been added to the support we offer parents and students. Career Tools can be accessed via the Schools Favourites section in Compass, look for Sandringham Career Tools.
Come in and see us
The Careers Room is open every lunchtime and after school. The Careers Department is now located in the library, at the Holloway Road campus. Students are welcome to come around and browse resources, ask questions, or book an interview. Parents are also welcomed to book an interview.
In the coming weeks there will also be a wide range information and resources available in the Bluff Road library for our 7 to 9 students.
Year 12
Early in the term a careers information session was held to explain the basic processes of how to research for course and pathway options, VTAC resources, understanding the ATAR and Selection Rank, SEAS and scholarships.
All Year 12 students have been allocated a one-on-one interview and this has been added to their compass schedule. Please locate your interview and set a calendar reminder. These have already started, and students have been sent resources and tips on how to prepare for their interview.
All domestic students applying for courses at the end of the year will need an Australian Tax File number and all students are required to have a USI (unique student identifier) to create a VTAC application.
Students must apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office.
Information on the Tax File Numbers, UIS’s and the UCAT has been posted in the Compass Newsfeed and on the library noticeboard.

Students considering studying medicine or dentistry are invited to access the iCanMed website for information about where to study medicine and dentistry, what the entry requirements might be, and all things related to the UCAT test. This is an excellent ‘go to guide’ to use as a resource.
Over the coming months, Monash University will be hosting a number of Discover Monash events or activities. Unless specified online**, these will be face-to-face events.
Participating in one or more of these events will assist students in making informed choices about their study options after Year 12.
The following events will take place in March, and students are encouraged to register early.
The Year 10 students have commenced working on their Career Action Plan (CAP) in preparation for embedded knowledge of skills/academia required for future careers.
Early in Term 2 we will be taking Year 10 students to the career expo held at Caulfield Racecourse. Most tertiary intuitions are represented along with the Armed Forces, Police, and apprenticeship groups. Students can talk to representatives and current students, collect information, find out about new courses, and attend seminars. It is a great way to start preparing for subject selection later in the year.
Year 9
The Year 9 students have recently commenced learning about career investigations and what it means for them moving forward toward subject choices for their future aspirations.
Year 9 students will also be given the opportunity to participate in the Morrisby Career Profiling program. This will be followed up in Term 2 with a 30-minute interview with an independent careers’ counsellor. More detailed information will be sent home shortly.
