Materials Technology

YEAR 7

In Term 2, the year 7 Materials Technology Classes have completed their design projects. The students used a variety of tools and processes to create designed solutions from resistant materials while documenting their work in folios including sketching, technical drawings, production lists and evaluations. The students produced creative designs and developed the skills required to bring their designs into reality.

YEAR 8

In Semester 1, the year 8 Materials Technology Class produced a range of projects focused on building tool skills and design ability.  The year 8 students learned how to produce rebate joints. This is a difficult task that requires accuracy, focus and attention to detail. The Year 8 team then used this new skill to build a moneybox from timber and acrylic using hand tools and the Epilogue Laser. The students documented their work and evaluated their own performance.

YEAR 10

During Term 2, the Year 10 Materials Technology Team completed their project commissioned by the Science Team Leader, Marcus Finlay. Marcus and the Science crew required a set of 4 garden beds for their students in the sciences to grow and observe plants and their life cycle. In term 1, the Materials Technology students interviewed Marcus and developed a design brief around the needs of the end user group.

The Year 10 team then designed a suitable solution to be built from pine sleepers and located at the back of the STEM facility. During Term 2, the project was completed and students created short films to document and evaluate the project, their teamwork and their communication methods.  Great work Year 10 Materials Technology.

YEAR 11

In Semester 1, the year 11 Product Design and Technology group have continued to develop their Design Folios while producing products in response to the needs of their end user. Early morning classes have been challenging for some but everyone has worked well to produce some interesting products using many of the tools and machines in the Lakes Technology workshop.
