Maths Pathway Reflection

In Years 7 – 10, students at The Lakes engage in a program called Maths Pathways. This program is set up to allow students to focus on learning the content that they are ready to learn. Each student works on an individualised program and can spend time extending themselves and filling in previous learning gaps. This program is in place to ensure that all students can achieve success in mastering content that is aimed at their specific level. While there have naturally been mixed attitudes towards this program, as all students enjoy learning in different contexts to one another, we wanted to showcase two students who have academically excelled while using this program.

Eliza R and Abbey Z are both Year 9 students who began using the Maths Pathways program in Year 7. They both successfully completed the program this semester, meaning that they have mastered every single mathematical concept presented to them in the whole Victorian Curriculum from P – 10A. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, persistence and commitment to learning. Below are their reflections on their time engaging with Maths Pathways.

Abbey Z:

What are skills that you learned through using Maths Pathways?

  • how to revise
  • doing modules in time
  • learning information quickly
  • asking for help
  • learning from mistakes

How would you summarise your experience with the program?

Maths Pathways had its ups and downs. Personally, my preferred learning style is through face to face teaching, however, Maths Pathways still supplied videos and in-depth examples of the maths content. Even though the tests every fortnight could come as a burden, they pushed me to make sure that I knew the maths content well enough to succeed in the tests.

Eliza R:

What are skills that you learned through using Maths Pathways?

  • time management
  • how to absorb information
  • how to apply that information
  • making predictions and connections
  • how to work independently

How would you summarise your experience with the program?

For me, Maths Pathways was a fun, but somewhat challenging program. When we first started, it was confusing getting used to everything, but when I became more familiar with it, it was quite easy to use. As I progressed through the program the modules started getting more challenging but more engaging.
