Grade 5 Home Learning Snapshot - Term 3/Week 8

Writing

This week students will move through the Stages of the Writing Process all the way to publishing their Biographies. They will use the  facts they collected about a person of interest to them and share this Biography with their teacher. Students will continue to practise ‘quick writes’ to improve their fluency, organisation and confidence in writing.

Word Study

Students will continue to practise 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos uploaded by their teachers. They will also continue to explore a reading or spelling rule which will help them when they decode or write words. There are 30 rules that students will gradually explore through their primary schooling.

This week students will learn and  "bootcamp" Rule 18. This is where the students practise the new skill until it becomes "automatic" in their brains.

Reading

This week students will continue their focus on the comprehension strategy of summarising. This week the focus will be on summarising Fiction texts. They will learn a range of strategies including; ‘Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then’. These strategies will help them summarise and find the authors purpose of fiction texts.

Students need to continue reading daily as part of their tasks and also at night for their homework. If your child needs some inspiration for reading, here are some authors or books that might be of interest.

Students should also be encouraged to continue working on their fluency by reading out loud for part of their independent reading - whether they call a friend and read to them or read to family members or even pets!

Maths

From Monday to Wednesday, students will revise what they have learnt this term in fractions, decimals and percentages. On Thursday they will apply their knowledge by designing their own flag or emblem. On Friday students will complete a range of worded problem solving tasks, differentiated to suit different ability levels.

Unit of Inquiry

This week in UOI students are continuing their investigation into ‘How We Organise Ourselves’. The focus this week will relate vocabulary and key concepts, such as responsibility and ethical decision making, as well as economic terms. Some of the economic terms students will be exploring include producers, production, productivity and consumers, resources and economic exchange before moving onto an evaluation of needs vs wants.

Responsibility and connection are the key concepts for this unit. Students will consider who holds what responsibility, how and why. They will be making connections between responsibility and sustainable economies, analysing whether the responsibility for economic consequences lie with the producer, government or the consumer.

Wellbeing - Zones Of Regulation

This week students will be exploring problems that have been grouped into big and medium, as well as small glitches.  They will choose two problems from each group and explain why these are big, medium or small sized  problems.

Being able to see why a problem is the size it is, helps them to deal with the problem appropriately and get help if needed.

Daily Wellbeing Activities

Students enjoyed the additional focus on Wellbeing last week. Each morning the whole grade would meet to play Charades, participate in a Talent Show, get their heart rate up with a range of fitness activities, or create a piece of Artwork. They completed a range of different activities each day, such as a Gratitude Tree, how they look after themselves and building their self esteem.
