Term 2 Week 7: Career News

In week 4 several students attended a Health Industries Immersion Day organized by Monash Tech School at Holmesglen Centre where they learned about different career pathways and opportunities within the Allied Health sector. This was a great opportunity for students interested in Nursing or other Allied Health occupations to gain a better understanding of the courses and pathways available to them, and also a deeper dive into what these occupations entail.

As part of this immersion day, and the other industry immersion events students have attended over the term, students earned a digital badge that they can access online and which serves to represent a learning experience that could be valuable to employers or educational institutions.

What is a digital badge?

A portable, verified, and secure representation of acquired knowledge, skills, and achievements.

What are digital badges used for?

A Digital Badge can be used on a person's website, social media pages, resume, and profile pages on professional networking sites such as LinkedIn.

What are the benefits of digital badges?

An employer can view the skills, training, education, and experience that the badge holder acquired, accumulated, or demonstrated to earn the credential that the badge represents.

Students who have been allocated a digital badge for a career experience they have participated in are encouraged to include their badges in their career portfolios and their resumes.

What industry did you work in for your work experience placement?

I completed my work experience placement in the Sports and Community Services Industry.

What were the tasks you completed as part of your work experience placement?

I helped with basketball programs and clinics for young kids that the organization ran. I also help set up games for that organization, by helping get all the appropriate resources ready. I also spent some time working with the people in charge of the organization's merchandise and social media.

What were your favourite tasks that you were required to do? Why?

I enjoyed helping with the merchandise and uniforms for the sporting club because I liked getting it all sorted and ready for the organization to give to its customers. I also liked setting up the resources used so games that this organization runs, run smoothly. I liked this because as someone who plays in this competition, I found interesting all the effort that goes into setting up these games.

What is something that surprised you about your placement?

The people I worked with at my placement were very chill and put me at ease. The range and variety of tasks and activities that I did during my placement were also surprising because they were different from what I expected.

Do you think would enjoy doing further work in this industry?

I think I would as I enjoyed my time at the placement, and I am interested in doing more in the future in this industry.

What is something you took away from your work experience placement?

Being able to work with other people in a collaborative environment, especially young kids.
