“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him”

Maya Angelou (1928–2014) - celebrated American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist

There has been much activity in the KRC over the last few weeks, with students completing homework and assessments and engaging in reading, both independently and through our WIRED program for Years 7 – 9.

WIRED stands for Wide Interest Reading for English Development.  It provides resources and dedicated time for students to read purely for enjoyment, with the specific aim of fostering a lifelong love of reading.   Librarians give a short overview of various books and themes in the collection, then the students select their own material based on their interests and spend around 40 minutes reading for fun.

Young people learn from role models and we encourage parents and families to set aside time to read and discuss books together.  It is valuable to teens to continue to see the importance of reading and engaging in literature of all kinds and in all parts of their lives.

Homework Club

The KRC hosts Homework Club – with learning support team available for assistance – on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays after school until 4:30pm.  If your student is in need of additional support with homework or understanding classroom content, please encourage them to come along and access the support on offer.

Periodicals

The KRC subscribes to a wide range of magazines, specifically aimed at student interests and curricular topics.  Often reluctant readers find magazines more approachable - short articles with are less overwhelming and are just as important as books in encouraging reading in areas of interest.  We welcome student requests if there are particular magazines that may be of interest that we do not currently subscribe to.

One of the lesser known but interesting magazines we have is OYLA.  OYLA - from the Kazakh/Turkish word for "think!" - is a monthly science magazine designed for curious minds aged 12+. Its mission is simply to strip away the complexity of STEM through stunning visuals and interactive storytelling. It combines Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Humanities with the goal of making learning accessible and exciting.

Term 1 Chess Tournament

The KRC hosted an in-house chess tournament for Term 1 on 23-25 February during lunchtimes.  It has been absolutely amazing to see just how ‘alive’ chess is at SPC, and to witness students mixing with, competing against, and supporting one another.
