WORLD BEE DAY MAY 20TH

Did you know why bees are so important?

Bees are in decline due to pesticides, habitat loss and climate change. They are essential for biodiversity.

Many fruits, flowers and plants reproduce through bee pollination. Humans and animals depend on them for food.

Bees can travel up to fourteen kilometres to find nectar. They will perform a ‘circle dance’ or ‘waggle dance’ to communicate to others in the hive where to find a pollen area.

You can look after bees at home by making a simple water fountain. Put out a shallow bowl of water, fill with rocks or shells to give the bees a place to rest their wings and have a drink. Brightly coloured flowers in colours of blue, pink, and yellow also attract bees into your garden.

Pathways Sustainability students located information about bees, and they have created a display at the office to raise awareness about the importance of bees.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OUR KITCHEN GARDEN

Yesterday our students noticed that the broccoli and silverbeet are growing well. This week, they planted spring onions and two varieties of carrot seedlings. The carrots will be ready in late September.
