Years 7 & 8 News

Over the first 8 weeks of the school year the Year 7 and 8 cohorts have been extremely busy both in and out of the classroom. It has been great seeing students turning up in the correct uniform, utilising our school breakfast club and heading to class ready to learn.

For our Year 7’s they started the term off by spending the first two weeks of school learning about how our school operates and how to be successful as a student at Maffra Secondary College. From here we headed off to Camp Rumbug where students got the opportunity to meet new students who they may not have interacted with before and establish friendships outside of the classroom. For staff it was also a great chance to get to know students better and improve student teacher relationships.

Most recently Year 7’s finished the NAPLAN testing. During the test sessions all students did an incredible job at following instructions during the test as well as being respectful to those still going once they had finished their test. It has been a great term for our Year 7’s and I hope both students and families feel proud of their efforts for the year so far.

For our Year 8’s they have been enjoying the new electives that come with Year 8, specifically Food Technology and Material Systems. When speaking with students about what they have enjoyed so far this year cooking new recipes and designing/building a vehicle were top of the list for many students.

Moving into Term 2 there are more exciting days approaching for both year levels. In our first week back we have cross country for all students and a few weeks after that is our athletics carnival. Outside of sporting days we will have visits from the Mobile Tech School who connect Wellington and East Gippsland Shire secondary schools to new and emerging technologies, careers, curriculum and real world learning opportunities.
