'Who we are'

Central Idea

Different cultures are influenced by many factors

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) world school, we explore six transdisciplinary themes each year to provide students with a broad understanding of the world. In Term 3, Year Six students will embark on an inquiry into how various factors shape and influence cultures around the world.

Unit Overview

This term, Year Six students will investigate the diverse elements that contribute to the development of cultures, focusing on how customs, values, and traditions shape societal norms and lifestyles. Students will explore key aspects of different countries, including their geographical and social contexts, and examine the issues that impact their people. By delving into customs, rituals, and lifestyle practices, students will gain insight into how cultural identity is formed and maintained. They will also explore the connections between the cultural practices of various countries and Australian traditions, fostering a deeper appreciation of both unique and shared elements of cultural heritage.

Key Concepts

Perspective: Students will examine how cultural perspectives influence practices and traditions within societies. They will understand that cultural viewpoints are shaped by historical, social, and environmental factors.
Connection: Students will make connections between different cultural practices and the broader context in which they exist. They will explore how customs and values are interconnected and how they reflect the identity of different cultures.

Action

Action in the PYP is initiated independently by the student as a result of the learning process. We celebrate our students’ ACTION every day in our classrooms. Year 6 students have the opportunity to demonstrate action every day in our classrooms. If you see your children taking independent action at home encourage them to share their action with their teachers and peers.

Approaches to Learning

Communication Skills:

Speaking: Preparing and delivering presentations on cultural and leadership topics will enhance students’ ability to clearly articulate their ideas.
Listening: Engaging in discussions and participating in cultural exchange activities will develop students' listening skills and their ability to process and respond to diverse perspectives.

Social Skills:

Collaboration: Working in groups to research and present on various cultural aspects and leadership will foster teamwork and cooperative problem-solving.
Empathy: Understanding diverse cultural practices and issues will help students develop empathy and respect for different viewpoints and traditions.

Research Skills:

Information Gathering: Students will practice gathering information from various sources to build a comprehensive understanding of cultural influences and leadership.
Critical Thinking: Evaluate the impact of cultural factors on societal norms and traditions to enhance critical thinking skills.

Learner Profile Attribute

Principled: Students will demonstrate integrity and a strong sense of ethics as they explore how cultural values and leadership intersect.
Communicator: Effective communication will be essential as students share their research and insights through presentations and discussions, showcasing their ability to convey ideas about culture.
