School Library News - Term 4

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

What an incredible year we've had in the library! From exploring our school values through literature, to conducting science experiments, celebrating Book Week with amazing costumes and activities, and diving into the Premier's Reading Challenge, our students have grown tremendously as readers, researchers, and critical thinkers. It's been such a joy to watch their confidence and love of reading flourish.

For our final term together, we have two fantastic learning adventures planned. In the first half of term, students will become fact-finding detectives as they explore the fascinating world of non-fiction. Then, in the second half, we'll celebrate the pure joy of reading fiction as students discover their favourite genres, authors, and stories to share enthusiastically with their peers.

OUR LEARNING THIS TERM

Foundation (Prep)

Our Preps will become curious explorers of the real world. They'll listen to fascinating non-fiction books and excitedly share amazing facts they discover about science and social concepts. Later in the term, they'll dive into wonderful fiction stories, finding books they absolutely love and sharing their favourites with friends. Watch out for all those "Did you know...?" moments at home.

Year 1

Year 1s will become fabulous fact collectors. They'll discover basic information about science and social concepts from non-fiction texts, then proudly share their most interesting finds with classmates. In the second half of term, the adventure continues as they explore different picture books to discover what kinds of stories make their imaginations soar.

Year 2

Get ready for some incredible discoveries. Year 2s will hunt through non-fiction texts to locate fascinating factual information about animals, cultural celebrations and roles in our community, then share their most mind-blowing finds. Later, they'll embark on a fiction exploration journey, building their reading preferences and confidently recommending their favourite stories to others.

Year 3

Year 3s are stepping up to the challenge. They'll dive deep into non-fiction books to uncover amazing information about biology, intercultural and social concepts, collecting 2-3 fantastic facts to share. Then it's time for fiction fun as they explore diverse texts, develop stronger reading preferences, and share their literary discoveries with growing confidence and enthusiasm.

Year 4

The "Weird and Wonderful" challenge begins. Year 4s will conduct exciting research using the Dewey Decimal System to investigate science and humanities topics, hunting for the most bizarre and brilliant facts to showcase on their creative A4 pages. Later in the term, they'll explore captivating fiction texts, refining their reading tastes and sharing thoughtful recommendations that inspire their peers to discover new books.

Year 5

Year 5s will take their research skills to the next level. Using multiple sources independently, they'll investigate fascinating science and humanities topics, presenting their weird and wonderful findings with impressive terminology and evidence on their A4 pages. The second half of the term brings fiction adventures as they explore diverse texts, develop sophisticated reading preferences, and share insightful recommendations that showcase their literary expertise.

Year 6

Our senior researchers are ready to shine. Year 6s will expertly use multiple sources to investigate topics, combining information brilliantly on their A4 pages to demonstrate deep understanding of scientific and historical concepts of their choice. Then they'll explore fiction texts to consolidate their reading preferences and share detailed, thoughtful recommendations with peers—perfect preparation for the rich literary discussions awaiting them in secondary school.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT

  • Ask your child about the amazing facts and books they're discovering
  • Explore both fiction and non-fiction books together at home
  • Encourage enthusiastic discussions about what makes books interesting and enjoyable
  • Visit your local library to continue the reading adventure

Let's finish 2025 with a bang! Happy reading and researching!
