Year 1/2 Classroom News – Week 8 Newsletter
Over the recent weeks we have been praying a Decade of the Rosary daily for the Flanagan/Hynes families. Mrs Flanagan was very moved by our prayers of petition and would like to express her gratitude for the condolences offered during this most difficult time.
We also welcome back Harper and Eden. It has been fantastic to hear of the amazing adventures they have embarked on and it is great to see their smiling faces filling our classroom once again.
Religion
As we move into our new Religion unit of Caring for all God’s Creation, we are reminded of our responsibility to be stewards of his creation. This links well to our Living Well, Learning Well policy as we learn to respect, care and learn about ourselves, our world and our God.
This is a photo of us enjoying the beautiful creation of nature and taking the time to appreciate living in the most gorgeous places on earth!
English
Grammar has been a focus for the last few weeks in English. This term, we have been exploring new ways to learn, create, and share our knowledge through both independent and in group settings, showing cooperation and enthusiasm in every task. With each lesson, we are building confidence and discovering skills we didn’t know we had.
Learning and being able to identify the correct terms of sentence structure such as clauses, paragraphs, adverbs to modify the meaning of verbs and adjectives, using commas to separate ideas, lists and/or dependent clauses in a sentence, and experimenting with writing complex sentences are important even at an early age. These are skills that will be developed as our students continue to deepen their writing and reading skills in years to come.
Mathematics
In Maths, Stage 1 has continued with making groups but this time with a focus on dividing groups into equal and unequal shares. Using the previously taught skills of skip counting and arrays have enhanced our knowledge and enabled us to subitise {identify without counting}mentally. The use of concrete materials at this stage is imperative to being able to fully understand why the skill of division is important {nobody wants to have less lollies than others!} and to help solve open-ended tasks such as I have 20 lollies that need to be shared. By answering this question, our students will identify number facts in numerous ways, illustrate their working out and show evidence of equal/unequal groupings. The next step is being able to complete division problems without the use of concrete materials. It is at this stage that students often show difficulty as the representation of the pictures may not be in a formal array, thus stretching them to use more complex strategies.
Book Week, Grandparents Day and Fathers Day
Thank you to each and every family for the efforts that you gave in creating costumes for this event. The “family” feeling that comes with being a part of St Patrick’s is a major contributor to what sets our school apart from many others.
