From the Principal

Linda's address to the the community

Good morning everyone, today students will finish at 2.30. I wish all of our families a wonderful 2 weeks. Please stay safe.

Term 1 is always a short term with so many things happening.

Our Year 7 students have settled in nicely, enjoying their time with us. They began by getting to know their teachers, other students and their surroundings. They swam in our pool and participated in the whole school swimming carnival and then the athletics carnival. These days are always fantastic for bringing the community together. They learnt about cybersafety and refined their numeracy skills with fun activities. Year 7 Meet n Greet was a great afternoon meeting with families. Grandparents morning tea was also a fantastic opportunity to see our young people learning and interacting in a classroom environment. Many of our students joined a squad and participated in many other sporting activities.

Year 8 students have also participated in many activities, including sport. The highlight for many was the camp held at Phillip Island. Students had a great time and learnt new things, such as surfing. They participated in an incursion with the Victorian Police, learning to be respectful citizens. They also joined Year 7 and 9 students in the Performing Arts building and listened to Indigenous women rangers from South Australia and Western Australia. They spoke about their work, history and culture.

Year 9 students completed their Morrisby profiles enabling students to begin thinking about possible career pathways. Some of them welcomed our Japanese visitors to the College and others learnt to play lawn bowls. Intermediate sport for Yr 9 and 10 also began with cricket, volleyball, frisbee and tennis.

Year 10 students enjoyed surfing at Phillip Island, bushwalking at the Briars and stand up paddleboarding at Scout Beach, Mornington.

Senior sport saw many students enjoy cricket, frisbee, volleyball, baseball and tennis. Year 11 students visited Cable Park and VM students attended Bayside Rock climbing. The Environmental students travelled to Merricks beach to learn about the movement of energy and nutrients across Earth’s four interrelated systems.

Year 11 and 12 Art students travelled by train to the National Gallery for VCE Art Making and Exhibiting.  Study Sensai worked with the VCE ATAR students assisting them with study skill development. Some attended a guided night walk at Mt. Rothwell Conservation reserve to study the Eastern Barred Bandicoot and other threatened species.

The other days were full of learning within the classrooms.

A great term with many opportunities for all students.

Middle School

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We had a fantastic response to our Grandparent/special adult morning tea on Monday Over 45 families attended.

Many of the comments from the morning related to how pleased the Grandparents were to see their grandchild working in class with others and displaying confidence. We even had grandparents drive from Bendigo to be here on the day.

For all of those who were able to attend, we really appreciate you giving up your time and being part of our college community for a morning.

From Jo Reeman - Year 7 Leader

Thank you to all the lovely grandparents, special friends, aunts and uncles that came along to our morning tea on Monday 25th March.  It was a fantastic morning where our special guests had morning tea (beautiful fresh scones made by our Assistant Principal Denise Leggett and Year 7 Coordinator Evangeline Romage) before heading into the classroom to experience what our Year 7 students do.  Guests learnt Japanese and made origami with Brindle Sensei, got their Bunsen Burner skills up to date in Science with Ms Lamb, helped students complete their gumball machine in Woodwork with Ms Adams and made story books in English with Miss Romage.

It was wonderful to see everyone having a great time, getting involved in the activities and enjoying firsthand what their special child is doing every day.

We can’t wait to invite you back again.

Wishing all of our families a safe and happy Easter and I look forward to seeing you next term.

Senior School

To students and families of the Mornington Senior School,

I want to wish all students and families the best as our Senior School students embark on a well-earned break. For our Year 12s, they have the opportunity to catch up and hopefully get ahead in their classes, catch up on some sleep and come back with renewed energy and focus for a hectic term 2. Teachers will have set some holiday homework tasks to ensure all students can compete their academic goals for each of their first semester subjects. With at least 70 hours free from classes and travel, this should provide an opportunity for students to be up-to-date with work and ready to return refreshed and ready for learning.

Term 2 will be an 11-week term with the exam period for Years 10 and 11 in week 8 and 9 (dates and exam schedules to be published in term 2) and will serve as a major milestone for students. All students studying a Year 12 subject (ATAR or VM) will sit the General Achievement Test (GAT) on the 18th June before commencing Unit 4 in the final weeks of the term. We can also look forward to course counselling information being explored towards the end of term 2.

Holiday periods can represent a break in routine for students which can be unsettling. A reminder that staff including wellbeing staff are not expected to be checking emails, Teams messages or receiving phone calls over the holiday period. For any emergencies students should contact 000. Lifeline is also available on 13 11 14.

Have a fantastic break over the next couple of weeks and we look forward to seeing our wonderful senior school students back at school on the 15th April in full school uniform, all learning materials for each class, refreshed and ready for a productive term.

As Easter approaches, students are gearing up for a well-deserved break. Beyond the festivities, this holiday offers a vital opportunity to pause, recharge, and yes, catch up on work.

Taking time off from the daily grind is essential for mental well-being. It allows students to rejuvenate, reducing stress and preventing burnout. However, it's also an ideal moment to tackle any backlog of learning tasks or review material covered earlier in the term.

By striking a balance between relaxation and productivity during the break, students can return to school feeling refreshed and prepared for the challenges ahead. So, as the Easter break unfolds, remember to indulge in some downtime while also making strides towards academic success.

Kind regards,

Mike Parker

Assistant Principal

Year 10 Update

The Year 10 students have certainly had a busy term, with the introduction of Connect Clubs, seminars on cyber-safety delivered by Victoria Police, Athletics, Swimming, Performance Tasks and new expectations. It has been incredible to see so many students rise to the occasion and prove that they deserve to be considered students of the MSC Senior School.

Attendance has been a big push for our students as we look to ensure students are in class as often as possible to access and complete the necessary work to pass their subjects. Some parents may have received notification that your child is "at risk" we would like to encourage those parents to communicate with their children's teachers regularly to be sure that they are accessing the work and demonstrating the capabilities to succeed in these subjects.

We recently sent out a quick notification on uniform expectations as we come to the end of Term 1. We empathise that students are looking for comfort in particular items of clothing, however we have a high standard to uphold regarding the MSC uniform, and we will issue consequences and communications home for repeat offenders who choose to wear items of clothing that do not sit within our uniform policy, particularly black flared pants, jumpers/hoodies and non-school shoes are being scrutinised and we encourage students and parents to ensure that they have the correct uniform for Term 2, and to reach out if you require support in acquiring it.

Thank you to all parents who have reached out to us across this term, we truly appreciate your support regarding your child's education at MSC and we hope to be of service as the year goes on. Anything we can do to support, please let us know.

Have a happy term break, we will see you back for Term 2.

Mr Jake Uhlenberg

Year 10 Leader

Year 11 Update

What a whirlwind of a term! The Year 11 students have settled in well and going with the flow of classes, SACs, learning tasks and school in general. Reflection surveys from the Year 11s show that the majority are happy with Year 11 despite the harder work and high expectations.

Attendance has been good overall but can always be improved. Please support your children to attend school every day. As the chart below states, it does not take many absences to be at risk in the VCE journey.

Our new lates process has been successful in ensuring that students arrive to their classes on time. Year 11 students have been wearing the correct uniform; remember flared trousers are not school uniform.

Subject teachers selected students who were subject stars for Term 1. These were students who showed our school values of Achievement, Respect and Community, who tried their best in every class and not necessarily the highest academic achievers. Only one student could be chosen but there were many who also exemplified these values.

Students received a prize from Year 11 Team Leader Dr Keough.

The Year 11 Coordination Team appreciate the respectful and polite behaviours of the Year 11 Students. Have a lovely Easter break and come back ready to learn in Term 2

Dr Jasmine Keough

Year 11 Leader

Year 12 Update

Well done to students on completing the most challenging term of their educational journey so far. The level up to Year 12 is a challenging one and it has been excellent to see so many showcase their ability to meet the situation and work to achieve their goals.

Special provisions applications have now closed, and we await response from VCAA. SEAS applications will open later this year for students who have suffered hardships during their schooling and wish to apply for special entry to university courses. More information will be delivered by careers and pathways teams around this in term 3.

With such a jam-packed term, it is hard to believe term 1 is only 9 weeks. Term 2 will see the conclusion of unit 3 in week 9 and the commencement of unit 4 for the final two weeks. The GAT will also take place next term in which all students will participate, regardless of VM or ATAR certificates. More information will be shared regarding this mid next term.

Well done to our cohort who are nearly 1/3 of the way to finishing their schooling this year. It is whirlwind but filled with exciting times. This week the Year level leaders ran an easter egg hunt which ran all day for students in year 12. Much chocolate was consumed and many smiles.

Please continue to support, motivate and guide your children in their goals for the year. Year level teams are here to assist and support the partnerships with home.

Mr Scott Kirkby

Year 12 Leader

Southern Metropolitan Region Swimming Championships

On Monday 25th March the Southern Metropolitan Region (SMR) swimming championships were held at the Oakleigh outdoor swimming pool. Our school was represented by six swimmers competing in 9 events. Our first event was the men’s 12-20 Years 100m breaststroke in which Cian Andrews won a bronze medal. Hannah Cooper swam a great 50m breaststroke race in the women’s 12-13 event placing 6th. Our super fish Cian Andrews was back in action again in the men’s 17 Years breaststroke going one better winning a silver medal to add to his collection. Next up was Heath Tiller swimming in the open 12-20 Years 100m butterfly event. Giants surrounded heath, boys all much older than himself. Heath displayed great determination to finish the gruelling event placing 8th. Cian was in action again in the freestyle men’s 16-20 Years races placing just outside the medals in fourth position. Sean Mackenzie pin dropped into the water to compete in the men’s 17 years backstroke event. Sean swam a strong race picking up a bronze medal for his efforts. Our last race of the day was the boys 17 Years 4 x 50 metre freestyle relay. Our relay team consisted of Sean Mackenzie, Cian Andrews, Jimmy Tiller, and Carter Nicholson. The boys swam a very strategic race placing their strongest swimmers first and second to hold a solid second place going into the final two legs. The boys swam their hardest to hold off the competition in the final two legs of the relay and were able to secure a bronze medal for their hard work. Throughout the day we were also responsible for timing lane seven so I would like to thank Curtis Eagleson and Jimmy Tiller for their dedication to this task. I would like to congratulate all our swimmers for representing the school and giving it their best effort. The step up in competition from Division level to SMR is significant. Anyone who competes at the SMR level has achieved success that they can be justifiably proud of. Well done indeed to all our swimmers.

Harmful Effects of Vaping

Parents, carers, schools, and community all play an important role in protecting children and young people from, and educating them about, the harmful effects of smoking and vaping.

Research from the Royal Children’s Hospital shows many parents and carers are not aware of the harmful effects or how their views about smoking and vaping can impact the likelihood of a young person taking up smoking or vaping.

The Department of Education has developed resources to help you learn more about the health risks of smoking and vaping. The resources include advice about how to talk to children and young people about vaping, and where to get support. To access the resources, go to https://www.vic.gov.au/smoking-and-vaping-advice-parents

You can also view this video on smoking and vaping from experts at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne for health advice and tips for starting a conversation with young people.
