Year 9 Real Industry Job Interviews
Ms Jane Alexander
RIJI is a career development program designed to give secondary students the opportunity to prepare for, and experience, a ‘real’(practice) interview situation. The Banyule Nillumbik LLEN offers this fantastic opportunity to schools.
In preparation for the interview excursion in CONNECT classes, an industry partner from AGA Apprenticeships came in to speak to the Year 9 students and offered tips and advice on what employers want, how to write resumes and cover letters and how to prepare for a job interview. This session enabled the students to enhance their job readiness skills in preparation for their mock interview.
Followingly, students prepared for the interview in CONNECT classes by writing a mock job application (a cover letter and resume) tailored to a particular job vacancy which was relevant and realistic to their age and experience.
The selected job vacancy was then sent to the interviewers along with a current resume and a job application/cover letter.
Students prepared for the mock interview beforehand, in class – role playing being the interviewer and interviewee. A standard set of interview questions was used.
The interview was held on Thursday 23rd October 2025.
The interviewers met with students, asked their questions and provide students with verbal feedback on their interview and application on the day.
Students have also received more extended and constructive written feedback from their interviewers since.
We would like to thank the industry volunteers who interviewed students on the day, and the Year 9 CONNECT staff, Ms Fogarty, Mr Harrison, Ms Dodd, Ms Daley and Ms Krausgrill, who prepared students so well.
A special thanks is also extended to Di and Trish who supervised students on the excursion and were involved in organising the event respectively.
The Year 9 students gained valuable insight into the world of work and represented the College well.
