Year 9 City Camp

Ms Sarah Daley

Our Year 9 students recently enjoyed an action-packed City Camp, exploring some of Melbourne’s most exciting locations.

Thank you to the wonderful staff that attended, to ensure our students had a memorable adventure in the City of Melbourne!

Term four brought us the long-awaited Year 9 City Camp.

Spirits were high and everyone was pumped as we met at Watsonia train station early Wednesday morning. We travelled into Southern Cross station, ready to participate in seven activities over the three days. The ‘Big Issue’, Skydeck and virtual reality, Victoria market, teppanyaki taster, escape rooms, ice skating, and the Magistrates Court.

The Victoria market was fun because walking around looking at all the different stores and what they were selling was a great start to the day. Some stores even have student discounts!!

The Eureka Skydeck was an amazing experience. We started off with the virtual reality then headed up to the observation level. We arrived there right as the sun was setting.  The views were spectacular!

On behalf of all the students, we would like to say a big thank you to the teachers responsible for organising camp for us, and to those who stayed with us and participated in the activities. We all had an amazing time.

I think I speak for all the Year 9s when I say camp was the highlight of the year!

When we first got to the hotel/accommodation after a long train ride and walk, everyone was excited to see their rooms. We were all in the same area and in rooms next to our friends.

The first day we went to the Big Issue and at night, we went to the Skydeck and VR experience. At night, there was a lot of excitement. With people hanging out in the common rooms and some people were even playing cricket.   The second day, we went to the Queen Victoria market, teppanyaki, escape rooms and to finish off the day, we went ice skating. Personally, my favourite activities were ice skating and the teppanyaki. The teppanyaki was fun as they cooked the food in front of us and we tried to catch cooked eggs in our mouths.   By the last day, everyone was dreading going back home. We all loved spending time with our friends, hanging around in the city. It was great to hangout with people who you didn’t normally and all get along.

It was a fun experience and overall, the best camp at Greensborough College so far.

City camp was an incredible experience! It was both fun and educational, by teaching us how to navigate the city and showing us the amazing wonders that lie within Melbourne. I would recommend to all upcoming year 9 students.

We met at Watsonia station at 8:45am with all our luggage and took a bus to the City, arriving at Southern Cross Station an hour later. We made our way to the accommodation to check in, get settled into our rooms and hang out with friends. After getting used to the accommodation we made our way over to the Big Issue building, which is a program giving support and recognition to the homeless and less fortunate. Here we learnt about homelessness in Melbourne and participated in activities and discussions. We listened to a guest speaker who told us about her life being homeless and the challenges she faced. The Big Issue helped her to find a safe place to live and helped us understand how important their work was.

In the afternoon we went to the Eureka Skydeck for a VR tour around Melbourne, then were sent 88 floors up to experience the amazing sunset in Melbourne. We got to see the city from so far up, had the opportunity to participate in ‘The Edge’ where you stand in a glass room 3 meters out from the building. Miss Krausgrill was more unnerved and shaken than the rest of us! We got an even better view of the city!

Day 2 started the day with a breakfast provided by the accommodation then we headed off to Queen Victoria Market where the students could shop around and purchase food, accessories, clothing and much more, but we were told to save our stomach space for Teppanyaki. After the delicious donut van at Vic market we went to a teppanyaki restaurant where we had a chef cook in front of us and played with our food in games such as catching eggs in our mouth and stacking bowls thrown at us.

After dinner we took a tram to docklands O’Brien icehouse for ice skating which as one could imagine was quite cold but nevertheless an amazing experience. Most students gave it a go by using the wall and some of which were great on the skates but no matter the skill level everyone had fun.

Day 3 was the last day of camp, we had our final brekky before going to DFO then heading to the magistrates court where we could sit in and listen to the court hearings some of which being quite exciting. After all that fun, all good things must come to an end, so we took the train home and arrived back at the station by 3:00pm.

We had a blast on Year 9 City Camp with the activities including teppanyaki, Skydeck, ice skating, VR, Magistrates Court and all the free time in the city, it truly was the best experience!

Teppanyaki was so good with all the different foods and flavours and all the fire coming up from the stove, this was one of my favourites.

The Virtual Reality was fun watching all the top places in Melbourne like the MCG and all the places you can go in the city and all the experiences that you can do. It really felt like I was in the moment and right in the middle of each location.

The Skydeck was a great spot to take photos with you and your mates. The sun was setting which made the moment perfect for seeing all the buildings and the MCG and AMMI park. This was one of my favourite activities.

The Magistrate’s Court was an interesting experience to see what was going on in certain court rooms and what people had done to deserve certain punishment.

I truly recommend this camp to future year 9 students!
