Staff in the Spotlight
With so many staff joining our team this year, we would like to give our school community the opportunity to get to know our new teachers in a fun way. Each week we will be spotlighting a new staff member and sharing with you all sorts of fun and interesting stories about who they are and most importantly, why they became a teacher, and what they love most about teaching!
This week we are spotlighting Wanchun Lin.
Wanchun is one of our new graduate teachers who has joined the Humanities and Languages team, and more recently picked up a maths class! Obviously, Wanchun is multi-talented being able to teach so many subjects and we welcome her to our Wantirna College community.
How long have you been teaching?
This is my first year teaching.
What school/university or organisation have you come from?
Monash University
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
I decided to become a teacher because of the impact my own teachers had on me while I was growing up. They supported me every step of the way and their guidance and encouragement inspired me to pursue a career where I could pay forward the same kindness to my students.
What do you love most about teaching?
What I really enjoy about teaching is seeing the growth in my students. It’s not just about academic progress, but also about watching them grow as individuals, gaining confidence and discovering their passions. Seeing them overcome challenges and achieve their goals is incredibly rewarding..
What are three things you would like your students to know about you?
- I love travelling.
- I have a cat (Sprite).
- I'm here to support you.
What has been one of your best teaching moments?
One of the best teaching moments I’ve had as a teacher was when a student who had been struggling with a difficult accounting concept finally understood it. This ‘AH-HA’ moment made all the hard work worth it. It reminded me of the power of perseverance and the joy of helping students succeed.
Where's your favourite holiday destination?
Switzerland
What tv show/series did you last binge watch?
Friends
If you could have 3 people for dinner (dead or alive) who would they be and why?

What is the one piece of 'advice' or the one thing that you always say to your students?
Try your best and don't give up. No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn't trying.
