5/6 Newsletter

On the countdown!

It’s hard to believe, but the countdown is officially on! Our Year 6 students have just over five weeks left before they spread their wings and say farewell to primary school. Preparations are well underway for their end-of-year celebrations — and yes, Mrs Davey is already stocking up on Kleenex!

Meanwhile, our Year 5 students are stepping up and showing great enthusiasm as they prepare their Captain speeches. There’s plenty of practise, polishing of shoes, and straightening of uniforms happening as they get ready to campaign in Week 7. Good luck, Year 5 — we can’t wait to see your leadership shine!

Maths - Division

In Mathematics, students have been exploring multiplicative relationships — recognising how multiplication and division are connected and how these relationships help solve real-world problems.

We’ve been investigating division strategies, including using known facts, partitioning, and understanding remainders in context. Students are also learning how to apply the order of operations to solve multi-step number sentences accurately.

These skills help students build strong number sense, think flexibly about problems, and explain their mathematical reasoning with confidence.

Tips for parents:

  • Use Real-Life Scenarios: Encourage your child to apply the order of operations in everyday situations. For example, if they are helping with shopping, ask them to calculate the total cost of items where they need to multiply quantities and add prices (e.g., 2 bags of apples at $3 each + 4 bananas at $1 each). This helps them see how the order in which they perform calculations affects the outcome.
  • Play Number Sentence Games: Create simple number sentences that include multiple operations and ask your child to solve them. For example, 3 + 2 × 5. First, solve it without brackets, then add brackets 3 + (2 × 5) to demonstrate how grouping symbols change the result. This will help your child see why it's important to agree on an order of operations.
  • Talk to your child about how the order of operations are relevant in real-life situations. Write the example as a number sentence and discuss the process of solving the problem.

English - Queenie in Seven Moves

In English, students have been reading Queenie in Seven Moves by Zanni Louise — a heartfelt and humorous novel about friendship, family, and finding your place when life keeps changing. Through Queenie’s adventures (and seven house moves!) students have explored themes of belonging, resilience, and identity.

As part of our English unit, students have been analysing characters’ emotions, comparing perspectives, and discussing how authors use language to show change and growth. They’ve also been writing their own reflections and creative pieces inspired by Queenie’s story.

Sport

Last week, our students took part in an AFL clinic (see photos), which was full of energy, teamwork, and plenty of fun! The session really inspired many students to give the game a go and showed some impressive footy skills across the field.

We’re now looking forward to our upcoming tennis clinics, where students will continue developing their coordination, fitness, and love of sport. Game, set, match!
