Year 10

This term, year 10 students have been busy focused on applied learning both within and outside of the classroom. Students have actively been engaged in tasks to demonstrate competency and understanding of key concepts across all subjects. For example, in numeracy classes, students made their own pizzas including the base as well as other hands-on projects.

Students were also able to demonstrate teamwork and emotional intelligence through participating in group games and then reflecting on the successes and challenges they experienced.

Further to this, students positively engaged in all excursions this term, starting with the Preston Market where they explored budgeting, shopping and item comparisons between locations as well as attending Whittlesea Technical School (WTS) at Melbourne Polytechnic Epping Campus.

Whilst at WTS, students learned how to utilise computer programs such as Canva and Publisher to create logos and images to print onto t-shirts and tote bags. They were also given the opportunity to create their own items of jewellery and key chains, with all students embracing these projects to produce gifts for their loved ones. It was fantastic to see students enjoying being involved in the multiple creative problem-solving challenges they were presented with each visit.

Year 11

Year 11 students have had a successful and engaging term 2. They have worked hard and tirelessly to complete their unit 1 studies. They have been able to demonstrate great leadership and teamwork. Students have been able to stay focused in class and engage in social cohesion activities throughout the term.

Students took part in a numeracy excursion at the Preston Market where they were able to analyse the cost-of-living crisis by comparing prices of certain products. Throughout the excursion students showed a great level of maturity to conduct themselves in a respectful manner within the community.

Students also took part in several activities as part of their PDS unit 1 at lunchtime to raise awareness towards a cause of their choice. These activities demonstrated the social connectedness and respect amongst the staff and students within the college.

Year 12

It has been a productive Term Two for the Year 12 students, as they have worked towards full completion of their Unit 3 studies.  The five-day year 12 program consists of the four Vocational Major (VM) subjects of Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development Skills (PDS) and Work Related Skills (WRS); a VET study and Structured Workplace Learning (Work Placement). Some students have also elected to complete a School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeships (SBAT).

It is important to remember that to achieve a full completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM), a student needs to complete at least 16 units, including specific requirements in literacy, numeracy, work-related skills, personal development skills, and Vocational Education and Training (VET).

A catch-up class program is offered to students each Thursday and every second Tuesday from 3.15 pm to 4.00 pm in room LO 4. Teachers also keep a learning outcome tracker, to allow each student to map their progress throughout each subject. Open communication is always encouraged between families, students and the school, to ensure that a proactive approach is followed regarding the support of student learning as they progress towards meeting the requirements of each area of study.

As part of delivering a dynamic program across the subjects, a range of classroom activities, incursions and excursions have been organised and delivered to add value to the curriculum program.

In Week 9, on Thursday the 19th of June, a Consent Education session was conducted by Secondary School Nurse, Lauren Pilakis. This important session formed part of the PDS program, and covered a range of information aimed at young people, as they navigate respectful relationships.

In Week 11, on Thursday the 3rd of July, the students will be travelling to the city to complete a Responsible Serving of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate. This qualification will allow students, once they turn 18, to work in bars and bottle shops, as well as learn important information regarding the effects of alcohol.

I would like to thank the Year 12 teaching team of Ourania Dounias, Paris Mantz, Vici Petrovski and Cindi Carr, for their efforts and support of the Year 12 students.

I wish all Year 12 students a restful break for the mid-year holidays and look forward to seeing them refreshed and focused on a successful Term 3.
