Mathmatics 

In Maths students will be engaging in Algebra learning opportunities including identifying and explaining rules used to create additive patterns that both increase and decrease and writing number patterns using algebraic expressions. They will be using mathematical vocabulary including, but not limited to, geometric pattern, growing pattern, function machine, algebraic expression, rule, and term. Students will engage in tasks related to applying their knowledge of equivalence to compare, order and represent common fractions, including halves, thirds and quarters, on the same number line.

Students will also be engaging in Measurement learning opportunities to assist them in converting between common metric units and length, calculating the perimeter of composite shapes where some sides are not labelled, and using the formula for the area of a rectangle to solve problems. 

As part of a unit on Statistics students will be identifying and explaining the difference between primary and secondary data used in media reports, including describing misleading elements on graphs. 

Starting this term some students in Grade 6 will be involved in the Junior Division Olympiad - an inter-school competition that has been designed to challenge high achieving students across Australia and New Zealand. These students will have an opportunity to demonstrate their flexibility in problem solving and mathematical reasoning, and to be recognised for their efforts and achievement.

Some Grade 6 students will participate in the Junior Maths Games program to build their confidence in maths and to learn and develop their problem-solving skills while fostering an appreciation of maths and its application to the real-world.

Maths Games runs along the same schedule as the Maths Olympiad and comprises four ‘contest’ papers, held approximately six weeks apart, starting in Term 2 on Wednesday 6th May.

This term, as part of their Home Learning, students will continue to use Maths Online, an online subscription that the school has purchased. This will provide students with an opportunity to consolidate mathematical concepts taught and to develop fluency in times tables and number sense skills. Students have been given their own username and password. 

Students will continue to be given the set task at the beginning of each week to be completed by the Friday of that same week.
