School News and Information

STAGE 1 NEWS
Welcome to Week 5, Term Two!
Stage One students have had a wonderful start to Term 2. We have enjoyed taking part in our Commonwealth Games activities, where students learned about the meaning and traditions behind this special event. The children also had a fantastic time at the school disco, dressing up as their favourite
superheroes. To top it all off, we have had lots of fun exploring Chinese New Year and learning about the rich traditions and celebrations associated with this important cultural
festival.
English
This term in English, the Magpie and Possum students are learning about Chinese New Year and the rich traditions associated with this important celebration. Students have built background knowledge about the origins of Chinese New Year and explored the traditional legend of Nian. Together, we read the book Nian, the Chinese New Year Dragon and discussed the author’s choices in retelling this ancient story.
As part of our writing, students designed their own imaginative dragons and wrote detailed descriptions using rich and descriptive language. We then used ChatGPT to turn their written descriptions into lifelike images of their dragons. The students were amazed to see how their words could be transformed into unique and colourful creations, bringing their ideas to life in a very exciting way.
We also had a special presentation from Jarrah in class. He brought in and shared his Barong dragon. Thank you Jarrah!
Maths
This term in Mathematics, the Magpie and Possum students have been learning about multiplication by making and describing equal groups. Students have used concrete materials, drawings and arrays to identify how many groups there are and how many objects are in each group. They have solved multiplication problems by using repeated addition and counting to find the total. Students have also represented multiplication and simple division problems using pictures, words and numerals. More advanced learners have applied the CUBES strategy to solve multi-step word problems and explain their mathematical thinking.
HSIE
This term in HSIE, the Magpie and Possum students are exploring the fascinating world of ancient civilisations, including China, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Through stories, myths and legends, students are learning how people lived long ago and what was important to them. They are also investigating famous landmarks such as the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Giza, the Parthenon and the Colosseum, and locating these places on maps. Students are discovering how many ideas, stories and structures from the ancient world continue to influence our lives today.
DISCO
Stage One students really enjoyed dressing up as their favourite characters and dancing the night away at the disco. The room was full of energy, laughter, and excitement as everyone showed off their best dance moves. It was a fun and memorable night for all.
We still have lots to look forward to this term, with Gymnastics starting next Thursday, the Magpie class assembly in Week 10, and our exciting Thalgarrah excursion in Week 11. Thank you for your continued support. We can’t wait to enjoy these special events together!
