These classes and students received their certificates at assembly last term. Thanks to Sam from Scholastic for supplying us with the vouchers for another term!

Now for the Term 4 updates:

Book Club is back!

With Issue #7 now closed, any orders that were submitted to the school can expect their items to be delivered in either Week 4 or Week 5 before the last issue for the year is released. Every time orders are put into Book Club, our school gets reward points (similar to Woolworths Rewards or Flybuys) to use on books for the library so I have been able to order $250 worth of new books for the library thanks to your purchases!

The Sound Challenge:

You may have heard of something from your children called The Sound Challenge. I use a sound detection application in the library to monitor how loud the students are and if they are being too loud for the library space, it puts out a loud gong sound to remind them to check their own volume. I have been using this since the start of Term 2. It’s important to note that it does not record any sound, it’s purely reactive. Because the app also counts the amount of times the sound goes off, I have made it a goal for the students to stay below or meet the “Safe” number and that they do not reach the “Danger” number. The “Safe” number reward is that they get ClassDojo points for respect, and if they reach the “Danger” number, they lose minutes from their library sessions equal to 5 minutes plus 1 minute for every time it continues to go off past the “danger” number.

The above screenshot is what I screencast from my iPad every day onto the library TV with the sound detection and alarm app and my looped library rules video. During Term 3, we found that simply having the “Safe” and “Danger” numbers wasn’t enough incentive for students to be respectful in the library space even with the clear expectations, so for Term 4 and continuing forward, I will be making it a competition.

There is now a ladder in the library and every class started at 0 points Monday in Week 1, with a possibility of reaching 20 points or -20 points. For every time classes stay at 0 on the sound counter, they will get 2 points on the ladder. For every time they get a number between 0 and the “Safe” number, they will only get 1 point. Anytime classes move up the ladder, they will also get the ClassDojo points for respect. If I don’t see a class for a week or they get a number between our “Safe” and “Danger” numbers, they will not move from where they last were, gain or lose any points. If classes reach the “Danger” number, they will lose a point on the ladder and move down one space. And if they double the “Danger” number, which has happened in the past, they lose 2 points. Anytime classes move down the ladder, they will also lose time in the library whenever I see them next. The goal for the classes is to get the highest up the ladder by the end of Week 10, because that class will get a special reward in their Week 11 session and will get to choose from a short movie, Zooper Doopers, or a free time session with the typical recess activities.

So far, it has worked really well! Compared to last term, there’s been a lot more classes passing the challenge and moving swiftly up the ladder. It’s important that students know the expectations of the library space because I have tried to make it as similar to a public library as I can. Even though public libraries aren’t completely silent anymore, there is still the expectation that libraries are quieter spaces and patrons need to be respectful to others in these spaces. Because our school library may be the first or only time children are encountering libraries, it’s important to connect it to what it’s like outside of school so that if they do use the public library in the future, they already know what they should generally be doing.

ClassDojo Calendars:

I have created calendar events for every class detailing when each class has their library days and if there may be any conflicts with events happening this term. You can click on each calendar event to read the description, with some weeks having specific information. Each event will send a reminder the day before and the day of the library day to give you time the night before to have a look for any books that belong to the school library. This was put in place to help remind everyone when library days are and to help students bring back books regularly and swap them over. Because Preps and Year 1 classes can only have 1 book for 1 week, it’s important that they are bringing their books back every week to get the most out of the library.

Thank you everyone and happy reading!
