Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL SEMESTER

As Term 2 concludes, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our students, staff, parents, and friends of Warrnambool Primary School for contributing to a fantastic first semester of 2026.

Your support, enthusiasm, and commitment to our school community have helped create a positive and enriching environment for all.

Whether in the classroom, on the playground, or at school events, it’s been heartening to see the way everyone works together to make our school such a great place to learn and grow.

Enjoy a well-earned break, and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for Term 3.

YEAR 1 FLAGSTAFF HILL EXCURSION

The Year 1 excursion to Flagstaff Hill on Wednesday was a wonderful experience for the children and consolidated their learning about life in the past. As well as going on a guided tour of the village, students took part in a session in the old school house, where “Ma’am”, (AKA Mrs Rea) taught them how to write using slate and about the expectations and rules that students had to follow at school in the past. Here are some snippets of student recounts after the excursion:

Yesterday we went on a bus to Flagstaff Hill because we are learning about life in the olden days. First we went to the blacksmith, then we went to the bank and we had a look at the olden days money. The money was different. Then we went to the school and it was very different. In the olden days they got a smack if they were naughty. Kingsley

First we went to see the flags then we went to the fire station next to the Steam Packet Inn. We went to the blacksmith and then to the old school to learn about what it was like in the olden days. Dwayne

We had to write in fancy writing in the old schoolhouse. I did not like writing in fancy writing. Olivia

We went to the dressmaker and the lady showed us how they made dresses.  Prisha

We got to see the giant peacock and it was so fascinating. My favourite part was the old school. I love excursions.  Cora

FIFA WORLD CUP

The Year 3 students have been having a fantastic time embracing the excitement of the FIFA World Cup! As part of our classroom activities, every student designed their own unique soccer uniform, showcasing plenty of creativity and imagination.

The classes have also loved watching some of the World Cup matches together. Yesterday's game between Colombia and DR Congo had everyone on the edge of their seats, creating an incredible atmosphere in the classroom! To top it all off, we now even have our very own FIFA World Cup trophy proudly on display. It has been wonderful to see students so engaged, enthusiastic and enjoying the spirit of this global event together.

VIKINGS

This term, Year 3 students have been learning about Vikings as part of their reading and writing. Charlie and Vinayak learnt that Vikings were crude raiders and decided they would not want them visiting Warrnambool. Chloe, Tahja and Anahat learnt that Viking boys were taught to use swords and sail longships, while girls learnt sewing and other household skills.

They each made their own viking longships to celebrate the end of the unit.

FAREWELL OUR CANADIAN VISITORS

This week we bid farewell to our Canadian visitors Ali Fast and Tanya Boult. Last week staff treated them to an Aussie morning tea which consisted of some favourite Aussie treats.

We thank them for coming to visit and we hope they enjoyed their time here as much as we have enjoyed having them.

HOT DOG DAY

Thankyou to everyone for supporting our Hotdog Day on the last day of term.

The students certainly enjoy the opportunity to eat a warm lunch on a cool winter’s day as a celebration of a great first semester.

Again, thankyou to the Fundraising sub-committee for organising.

SCHOOL CROSSING SUPERVISORS - JAMIESON STREET

A friendly reminder regarding safety and parking around the Jamieson Street crossing. It is illegal to park close to the crossing when the flags are displayed. If you are too close, it is difficult for the Crossing Supervisor to see oncoming traffic, especially if your vehicle is large. The safety of your children is of paramount importance to the Supervisors so we would appreciate your assistance in ensuring that this is complied with. Please note that the easeway at the pickup gate on Jamieson Street is for students with disability. No other families should use this at the busy collection time.

Your friendly Crossing Supervisors.

MOVIE/ELECTRONIC GAMES/ONLINE CONTENT REGULATIONS VICTORIAN SCHOOLS

In Victorian Government schools, the selection of films and computer games for educational purposes is governed by the Department of Education's guidelines on selecting appropriate teaching and learning resources.

Key Regulations for Selecting Films and Computer Games

Age-Appropriate Ratings: Teachers and principals must ensure that the content ratings of films and computer games align with the age group of the students. For instance, materials rated M require parental consent before use in Primary Schools.

G and PG no parental consent is required.

Educational Value: The chosen materials should support the curriculum and have clear educational objectives.

Community Sensitivity: Schools should consider the cultural and religious sensitivities of their community when selecting materials. If a resource is likely to cause objections, schools must inform parents and offer alternative resources where possible.

Parental Consent: For materials that might be deemed controversial or are rated M or higher, schools need to seek parental consent (Secondary).

Controversial Content: If a resource contains themes that might be considered highly offensive or obscene by the school community, it should not be used, regardless of its educational value.

These guidelines ensure that the materials used in schools are appropriate, respectful, and beneficial to students' learning experiences.
