WELLBEING
What is it about hugs that we as humans need?
Humans need contact and connections. It is an innate and fundamental need that all humans have. A hug can set off chemicals in our bodies that keep us balanced and functioning well. These are our feel good hormones - oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin - and after they are released, we can experience happiness, improved mood, relaxation and lower levels of stress and depression.
A hug is also a great co-regulation strategy. We discussed regulation in the last Newsletter. Did you know that in order for humans to learn how to effectively self-regulate as adults, we need to be shown how to through co-regulation as kids. We can support kids to co-regulate through the tone of our voice, body and facial cues, and physically just being there. A soothing hug is a great way to calm a dysregulated little one.
Relationships are so important to us as humans. We need connection. An 8 second hug changes and resets you. Go and hug your kids, family and friends daily… but remember that some people don’t feel comfortable with hugs - it is respectful to ask first!
