Year Four

Dear Year Four Families,

As we reach the halfway point of Term 2, we congratulate our students on their efforts and achievements thus far. This term has been filled with exciting events, and there is still plenty more to come. Our second Unit of Inquiry, "The distribution of finite resources may lead to conflict," is about to finish. We will soon begin our new Unit of Inquiry, "Media can be a powerful tool that influences thinking," under the transdisciplinary theme of How We Express Ourselves.

Athletics Carnival

The Year 3 & 4 athletics carnival was held on Tuesday 21st of May. It was tremendous to see students working together, demonstrating resilience, and supporting their teammates. The event was a wonderful display of house spirit, with students proudly representing their school houses. Their participation and growth mindset were evident as they persevered through various challenges, making the day a memorable and inspiring experience for all. It was wonderful to see students participate enthusiastically and earn ribbons for their achievements.

Reading:

In reading, students showcased their inquirer skills by gathering information from texts to enhance their writing. The compass point thinking routine was among the tools utilised by students to aid them in exploring a topic and mapping out their thoughts. This research component supported their writing as they independently researched their chosen topics for persuasive writing. It provided a valuable learning experience as students learned to discern reliable sources and take effective notes for their work.

In addition to their research efforts, students also practiced their visualisation skills to enhance their reading comprehension and explored word choice used by authors to convey meaning and purpose through their stories.

Writing:

As our current unit of inquiry comes to a close, students have been exploring various devices and features of persuasive texts. They have had the opportunity to create their own writing pieces and one about the Adani coal mine. It is wonderful to see students using their creativity and applying what they have learned by incorporating rhetorical questions, emotive language, exaggeration, and modal verbs into their writing. After following the writing process, students were excited to publish their work.

Mathematics:

In mathematics, students have been exploring the concept of data and angles.

Students enjoyed collecting data by conducting their own surveys and using the results to create graphs. They explored and evaluated different data displays to understand how to represent information effectively. Students also identified various types of data and selected suitable graphical displays for given data sets.

Students are learning to identify angles as measures of a turn so that they can compare angle sizes in everyday situations.

Students have been learning to label different angles, classify the angles, estimate the degrees of the angle. Students have learned how to use a protractor so that they could accurately measure and compare different angles using degrees.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, students have displayed the learner attribute of inquirers by researching into a non-renewable resource such as coal and a renewable resource such as solar, wind or hydro energy. The students were able to write notes to form their arguments and their stance whether they agreed or disagreed with the energy resource chosen.
