From the Year 1 Classroom

We are almost at the end of Term 2... Where has the last 6 months gone??

It was wonderful to see how mature and respectful the students were during Friday’s Mass last week. They sat beautifully and took part in all the prayers and songs. Well done, Year 1 – you represented our school with pride.

As the mornings are getting colder, we do recommend that students wear a jacket/jumper to school. Please ensure that all jackets, beanies, and jumpers are clearly labelled with your child's name. We are finding many unlabelled items, which makes it difficult to return them to their rightful owners.

Literacy

We have been focusing on reading and spelling words containing the split digraphs ‘a_e’ and ‘i_e’ and ‘o_e’, with the ‘bossy e’ making the vowel use its long sound. Students have learnt that these split diagraphs make the middle vowel sound say its name. As you read together, ask your child to find these words and make sure they are reading the diagraph as one sound.

Our new Tricky Words for this fortnight are; before, after, these, work, children and baby.

Please make sure to practise all the tricky words listed at the back of the Term 2 take-home reader book. It would also be beneficial to revise and practice the tricky words from both Term 1 and Term 2 on a weekly basis to help reinforce learning.

In Writing, we have loved diving deep into our mentor text Max by Bob Graham, where we are critiquing the pictures and understand the main elements of the story. We have loved looking at how different authors and illustrators use words, pictures and problems to make their stories more interesting. Our vocabulary words this fortnight are; legendary, hover and firmly. See if your child can put any of these into a sentence.

Maths

In Mathematics, we have been learning how to solve problems using addition and subtraction. Students are introduced to number sentences, using the symbols ‘+’, ‘-’, and ‘=’ to represent addition and subtraction stories. They are supported in developing these skills through strategies such as counting on and counting back, as well as partitioning numbers into tens and ones. Visual tools like ten-frames, number bonds, number charts, bar models, and number lines are also used to deepen their understanding.

Religion

We are still exploring our unit on Baptism. Students have gained a greater understanding of belonging and family. We have looked at how and when they feel connected to the Catholic Church. Students have looked exploring the symbols of Baptism and even got to experience what they look and feel like.

Thank you to those who have sent in pictures of symbols of their child's Baptism. They loved sharing their stories and images. Last call for any more pictures or symbols to share.

Inquiry

In Inquiry we will be learning about the natural, managed and constructed features of places. Students will get a chance to observe, identify and describe these features within our school grounds and out in our community. Using Dreamtime Stories, we will be looking at how Indigenous Australians identify natural features and how they were created. Lastly, we will be describing the features of local parks and investigate how they are cared for.
