Inquiry We have continued looking at important events in Australian history, in particular the events that led up to the Gold Rush of the 1850s and the influx of gold seekers to Victoria. We are learning about gold mining, licences, the Eureka Stockade and the rebellion of the miners in preparation for our Sovereign Hill camp next week. We are continuing to work on our gold rubric, completing activities to earn karats for our auction in Week 11. Here are a few of the activities that have been completed so far …

Cross Country

Congratulations to Stevie and Danny on their fantastic efforts at Regional Cross Country last Friday. Well done to Stevie for finishing 6th in the 11 year girls. Stevie will now compete at the State Cross Country Championships in Term 3. Good luck from all of us Stevie. We are so proud of you.

Home Reading- REMINDER

Students in Year 5 are encouraged to read at home for a minimum of 80 minutes per week. This is to be recorded in their school diary. Diaries are used at school throughout the week, so we ask that rather than taking diaries home, children recorded their reading each morning as part of their daily set up. Diaries will be checked by class teachers each Friday.

Literacy

This week we finished reading our latest class novel, Waves. The book, a narrative nonfiction, is about the waves of migration to the shores of Australia. We have been using the stories of the refugees leaving their home, their families and their friends as inspiration for writing a historical narrative, based on the life of a migrant, hoping to strike it rich by coming to Australia during the gold rush.
