On the first day of Term 3 we welcomed Azizeh Maher back to North Geelong to address the VET Beauty class. Azizeh graduated in 2016 and took on work as a Personal Carer in the Aged Care sector, as this is what she had studied for her VET during her final years at NGSC. After a couple of years she realised that this was not what she wished to pursue, so she enrolled in the Diploma of Beauty Therapy at the Gordon – an area in which she had always shown interest. Here she flourished and received the award for Excellence in the Hair and Beauty category for her commitment to study. On graduation, she was quickly recruited by Saltair Spa, and worked there for six months before the opportunity arose to expand her skills in other beauty treatments at the salon ‘I Know A Chick’. Here she took on further training and is in an environment that allows her to develop more meaningful relationships with fellow workers and clients. 

Azizeh spoke about pursuing areas that you are passionate about, and the need to always be willing to learn new skills. 

Wednesday 24th July saw Dennis Richter (2006) return to NGSC to assist with an interactive session run by Alan from the Australian Foundry Institute. The ‘Foundry in a Box’ was presented to Ms Henry’s Science For Life class. Students learnt how to set the mould in the frames, by packing them with sand, and then cast the molten metal into the die. Once cooled, they removed the die, then trimmed and filed their piece. Students learnt about the industry, in particular IXL in South Geelong, where they are looking for a younger workforce to train in the field. Dennis will be returning to talk with the Year 10s on Career Day next week. If anyone is interested in further information about apprenticeships in the industry, please come to see me in the Careers Office (Wednesdays or Fridays).
