M.P.W Tournament of Minds school report

By Amelia P & Felix L

On Saturday the 24/8/2024 tons of schools went to La Trobe University to compete in the Tournament of Minds competition. Some teams will go through to the finals.

Our school teams both selected the STEM challenge, which was about creating a device that would reduce plastic pollution. Our presentation was based on cleaning up the beach. We created a device that collects rubbish from the beach and sifts out the sand. Group 1 made some art with the plastic, possibly to sell it and group 2 did the same thing, with the money that they raised going to the Sea Shepherd charity. This charity takes plastic out of the ocean and if it's too late they’ll look inside the animal and take the plastic out its throat. This way animals won’t become extinct.

Please stop littering, it would help a lot!! Recycling plastic is better than just throwing it away. Instead of throwing it away we can recycle some plastics. (Or at least most.) If everyone did this our environment would change lot. Imagine an adorable baby seal caught in a net. What would you do? Save it? (Yes) Watch it struggle in pain? (No)  Do the right thing! This is what the symbols look like…
