Helping Teens Find the Perfect Reading Balance

Balancing schoolwork and leisure reading can be a real challenge for teens. But don't worry, we've got your teen covered with some awesome tips, especially during those hectic exam times!

Timing is Everything: Set aside specific times for studying and reading. Treat reading as a well-deserved reward for hitting the books, making both activities exciting. You can even make it a family event with a dedicated reading hour.

Create a Must-Read List: Busy school days can sometimes push your teens leisure reading aside. Create a list of books they are dying to read, so their reading hobby stays alive even when things get crazy.

Find a Reading Buddy: Team up with a study or reading partner. It's not just great for getting things done; it's also an opportunity to connect with others over shared interests.

Keep it Enjoyable: Don't turn reading into a chore. Get them to enjoy the process at their own pace. Remember, even a little reading goes a long way.

Audiobooks to the Rescue: If school reading is sucking the fun out of it, give audiobooks a try. They offer the same immersive experience in a different way, so your teen can stay connected to their favourite stories.

Don't forget, pleasure reading is super important for students. It sparks curiosity, boosts critical thinking, creativity, and language skills. Let's keep that reading habit alive and thriving!

AUSTRALIA READS LITERACY REVIEW

In the Heathmont Gazette edition 5, Librarian Teacher Bonnie Ahles talks about teenagers and reading. Following on from that, Australia Reads, a group that wants more people in Australia to read’ use research to show why reading is important. In 2022, they started a project to collect information from all over the world to encourage more people in Australia to read.

Australia Reads is concerned because not many people in Australia are reading. They say 44% of people find reading hard, and 25% haven't read a book in a whole year. They use research to explain why reading is important and started their project in 2022 to get recent information from all over the world.

Researchers are looking at how teenagers read in today's world with lots of technology. They're studying things like what interests’ teenagers, how much time they have, and the technology they use. They're also looking at how school and family affect how teenagers read, as well as what makes it easy or hard for them to read.
