Teenagers and Reading

It is not unusual for teenagers to be reluctant to read for pleasure.  They usually have access to devices and social media that tends to soak up a great deal of their free time.  Even children who read widely during primary school tend to drop off once they enter high school.  The good news is that research shows that students who were readers when young will return to reading in their late teenage years.  There are several steps parents can take to encourage their teenagers to read.

Have a variety of books readily available.  If there are books around the house, they reinforce the value of reading.  It doesn’t matter if it is fiction or nonfiction, often books on sport, hobbies, computer games etc. will be more appealing.

Be a reading role model.  Even if you don’t often read yourself, you do read every day!  Tell your child about an article etc. you read online, a book review you might have read, or remind them of books they enjoyed when they were younger.  Let them see you reading.

Don’t judge what they choose to read.   Be it Graphic Novels, cookbooks, vampires or romances, all reading is worthwhile.  Finding a book they enjoy may take a while, so be patient as they work their way through various genres.

Encourage them to visit the school or local library.  We have a fantastic collection at Heathmont Library.  Students can borrow as many books as they like for 3 weeks, and they can renew them for longer.  They are not ‘hounded’ about overdue books, just occasionally get a reminder about books they have on loan.  The library is open to purchasing appropriate titles your child might like to read.  Library staff are also happy to suggest a book that may appeal, they just need to ask!

Being a good reader is one of the factors that determine success in secondary school.  Reading does not only help them in English, it also is essential for all other subjects.  Reading is like any other habit; it becomes easier the more you do it!  If you would like us to help your child find an interesting book to read, feel free to email me at:  bonnie.ahles@education.vic.gov.au
