Music Room Overview – Term 4 2025

Year 3

In music this term the year 3 students are using boom whackers to play music with a focus on beats and rhythms. They have been taking on the role of conductor to direct a boom whacker orchestra to play fast, slow, loud and soft. In coming weeks, they will be accompanying their singing with everyday objects as they learn The Cup Song – otherwise known as “When I’m Gone”. They will also use their knowledge and creativity to compose and perform their own rhythmic patterns.

Year 4

The year 4 students have also started the term using boom whackers. They are using them in collaborative groups to explore the Em pentatonic scale and songs that use it. We are focussing on “From Little Things Big Things Grow” by Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody and will learn to sing and play the pentatonic melody on recorders and ukuleles. The students are also composing their own melodies using notes from the Em pentatonic scale.

Year 5

The year 5s have started the term learning about scale degrees, and why and how musicians use roman numerals.  They will be building on this knowledge to develop an understanding of chord families and common chord progressions. We will be singing various songs that use the I, IV, V progression including the classic “Twist and Shout” and “Took the Children Away” by Archie Roach.  We will then move on to look at some of the many songs that use the I, IV, V, vi chords.

Year 6

The year 6s are preparing for their graduation ceremony at the end of the year and collaboratively working towards creating a performance that will celebrate the musical skills and knowledge they have accumulated throughout primary school and send them off to high school in style!
