CELEBRATING BOOK WEEK AT SFS
‘SYMPHONY OF STORIES’
Monday was a special day at SFS as we held our annual Book Week celebration day. We gathered together in the morning and kick started our day by unpacking this year’s theme, ‘Symphony of Stories, reading the picture book ‘Get Back in You Books!’ by Rory H. Mather and holding our costume parade. It was great to see so many families also attend and join in the fun. The parade was once again a highlight and the efforts of both students and staff in preparing costumes was evident, with everything from picture book favourites, novels, movie tie-ins and even some pre-historic creatures all represented. A special shout out to Ange, whose enthusiasm during our parade made it all the more fun, and Melody for being our official photographer.
The remainder of the day was spent with students exploring one of the CBCA shortlisted books in their home groups and creating an art piece based on the text. It was fitting that a day which celebrates the joys of reading ended with students across F-6 coming together in their spaces for partner reading, with students sharing some of their favourite books from home and school.
Thank you to parents/carers for helping their children organise their costumes and to the SFS staff, for their participation and support of this wonderful day. We would also like to thank the Parents and Friends for providing a special treat for students to add to the fun of the day.
As Book Week comes and goes for another year, it is also a good time to reflect on the importance of reading for enjoyment at home and at school. In the words of Anthony Field from the Wiggles:
‘Reading for pleasure is one of the most important gifts you can give to a child. It sparks their imagination and opens doors to endless possibilities, inspiring them to dream big and explore new worlds’.
In considering the above I would like to leave you with some interesting reading statistics from the ‘Australia Read’s website – https://australiareads.org.au/research/ which I have listed below:
- Three in Four or 74% of Australian parents believe that reading to their child provides them with an important bonding experience and helps them to connect.
- 90% of parents agree that books can create opportunities for conversations with their children.
- One in Five parents STOP reading to their children before age 9, while of those children aged 6-8 whose parents stop reading aloud to them, half (51%) DID NOT want them to stop.
- 74% of children agree that reading (both fiction and non-fiction) is a way to help them understand the world.
As parents and carers, never underestimate the role you play in your child’s reading journey. Sharing stories that you enjoyed as a child or can enjoy together creates a shared experience that children will remember for a lifetime.

LS3 CLINIC ONE WRITING - BOOK WEEK
As the excitement of Book Week continued, Clinic One looked at the pictures of themselves dressed up in their costumes. We discussed their favourite characters and the stories they came from. The children proudly shared who they dressed up as and explained why they chose that particular character.
It was wonderful to hear their ideas and see their enthusiasm as they talked about their favourite characters. They then composed a sentence about who they dressed up as.

LITERATURE STUDIES - UNCLE XBOX
SENIORS - LEARNING SPACE 3
This term, the Seniors have been enjoying the story Uncle Xbox and have been taking a deep dive into the characters and their experiences. The students have been developing their understanding of how characters think, feel and behave, while also exploring the author’s clever use of a range of words to bring the story to life. They have made connections to their own experiences by thinking about times when they have felt similar emotions to the characters. The children have also been putting on their “prediction hats” and using clues from the story to make thoughtful predictions about what might happen next. It has been wonderful to see their ideas, discussions and growing confidence as readers!

SOCIAL JUSTICE ACTION TEAM
Support Our Quantity in a Jar Fundraiser
Our Social Justice Action Team is asking our school community to support our Quantity in a Jar Fundraiser, raising much-needed funds for St John Bosco School in Vailoa Palauli, Savai‘i, Samoa. The Salesian Sisters opened the school at the beginning of this year and are working hard to provide education and opportunities for the local children. Every contribution, big or small, will help support the school and its students. We encourage our families to get behind this wonderful cause and help us make a difference!
SENIOR SPORTS
Grade 5/6 Sport
Today, our Grade 5/6 students competed against Kilberry Valley Primary School. They performed admirably and demonstrated commendable sportsmanship throughout their various sports. Congratulations to all the participants from Grade 5/6 for their efforts today. They are enhancing their understanding of strategies to improve their gameplay, which will contribute to their confidence and preparedness for the upcoming Lightning Prem later this term.
The Interschool Sport, Grades 5 and 6 students will be participating in one of the following sports: Cricket, Tennis, Basketball, Handball and Softball

JUNIOR SPORTING EVENTS
JUNIOR ULTIMATE FRISBEE CLINICS
Juniors will have their third Ultimate Frisbee Clinic on Monday. Please ensure students are wearing their sports uniform and have their water bottle. We have three clinics left.
Reminders will also be placed in Afternoon Reminders.

JUNIOR & SENIOR SPORTING EVENTS
GRADE 3/4 AND LS2 JUNIORS CRICKET CLINICS
Grade 3/4 students and LS2 Juniors had a great time with Tom from Cricket Victoria last Friday. We also had lots of visitors from the Lynbrook Cricket Club.
We would like to thank Cricket Victoria for this opportunity. If your child enjoyed the session during school, you can continue their cricket experience by joining the Lynbrook Cricket Club. A flyer with further information can be collected from the office.
GRADE 3/4 AND LS1 JUNIOR NETBALL CLINICS
Casey Netball will be providing free netball clinics for our Grade 3/4 students and LS1 Juniors on Friday 11th September while the Grade 5/6 students participate in the Resuscitate a Mate Program. We hope the Grade 3/4 students and LS1 Juniors enjoy the clinics and some might even discover that this is a sport they might want to take up out of school hours.
Students are to wear their sports uniform and bring their water bottle on the day. Further information has been provided to parents via nForma.
SENIOR SPORTING EVENTS
LIFESAVING VICTORIA – RESUSCITATE A MATE
This year we have once again organised Lifesaving Victoria to deliver the ‘Resuscitate a Mate Program’ for the Grade 5/6 students. Life Saving Victoria’s Multicultural Resuscitate a Mate program is designed to introduce participants to emergency response management (DRSABCD). In the 1-hour interactive session, participants learn the steps to follow in an emergency situation and the skills to potentially save a life. This program is delivered by a trained Lifeguard.
The program will be delivered on Friday September 11th and will build on what the students have already learnt in their St John’s First Aid session.
Students may wear their sports uniform on the day. Further information has been provided via nForma.
WHOLE SCHOOL SPORTING EVENTS
SFS TERM 3 AFTER SCHOOL AUSKICK
Students had an awesome time at their second after school Auskick Program. We would like to thank Tyler from AFL for organising the program for us and Jonah for running the clinic.
If you would like your child to attend, it’s not too late. Please use the QR Code on the flyer or the link below to register your child. This will be the last opportunity to register your child.

To pick up your child, please enter via the gates off the car park near the hall. If your child is going to after school care after the Auskick clinic the coaches will take students there. If it’s raining the session will be held in the Hall. Please enter the Hall door to collect your child at 4.20pm Parents are most welcome to stay and watch.
TERM 4 SWIMMING
Swimming will take place in Term 4 beginning in Week 1. Thank you to all the parents who completed the nForma permission form so promptly. If you have not yet given permission please do so promptly as I need to provide final numbers.
Parents who have volunteered to assist the juniors, I will be checking that your Working with Children Check is current and registered with the school office. I will then organise a briefing session prior to the end of term which you will need to attend if you would like to assist in the change rooms.
Swimming timetables have been uploaded onto the nForma permission form as an attachment. Please print it off and ensure you have it available at home. It would be great if all students could remember to wear their bathers under their uniform on swimming days and bring a bag with their towel, undergarments and thongs. We would really appreciate it if office staff do not have to ring parents on swimming days to bring student’s swimming gear to school. Parents please note you are welcome to attend Casey Leisure to view your child’s lesson but photographs and videos are not allowed and only parents I have contacted will be able to assist in the junior change rooms.
A reminder to parents that swimming is an important part of the PE curriculum and all students are expected to attend. It’s imperative that students know how to keep themselves safe around water. If there is a medical reason your child cannot attend, you will need to provide a medical certificate for your child to be exempt and for the swimming levy to be removed from your fees. Students not attending swimming will remain at school in another Learning Space.
