Henny Penny Hatching Program – Class Three Yellow
At our Early Learning Centre (ELC), we implement an emergent curriculum, and through this, our recent ‘Egg Inquiry’ was launched. It stemmed from a question posed by one of our learners: ‘What comes from an egg?’ This allowed our Educators to learn alongside the children and become co-researchers, and we discovered that a chicken does indeed come from an egg.
To take our learners on a new discovery we engaged in the Henny Penny Hatching Program. Over two weeks the children eagerly watched and waited in anticipation as several little eggs lay within an incubator.
As each day passed our learners used their observation skills to view a glimpse of the little chicken from within. It didn’t take long before, a tiny crack appeared on an egg! As we captured this moment in time, our learners realised that a small crack soon became a larger one, and sure enough, out came a bright yellow feathered friend.
During the two-week program, we were able to watch, observe and illustrate the arrival of 13 feathered friends!
As we reflect on this inquiry and experience, we gained a deeper understanding of chickens and found answers to many questions posed by our three-year-old learners. We were able to research and illustrate our understandings and findings through many mediums, but we will definitely miss the sounds from our breezeway of the recent feathered friends.
