What a wonderful start to the year we have had. The Preps and year ones are settling into the new routines of school easily and the scene is set for a wonderful year ahead.

Discovery

Our Discovery unit this term is “How times have changed”, where students are developing their understanding of how the past is different from the present. We have been exploring how school, technology and transportation has evolved.

We are excited to attend our excursion at Bundoora Park Farm on Friday 22nd March to step back in time and experience life as it was in the early 20th century. We are asking that students come dressed up in olden day clothes to enhance their experience. Don’t forget to consent and pay for this excursion on Compass. Please see the office if you are having any difficulties.

Buddies

The Prep and year one students have now been assigned a buddy for this year. This unique partnership fosters a supportive environment where our little learners not only receive guidance but also develop lifelong friendships. With their older buddies by their side, our young students feel a sense of security and belonging, easing their transition into school life. Through shared experiences and mentorship, our Grade 5 and 6 buddies demonstrate leadership qualities and empathy, while our younger students gain confidence and valuable social skills.

Our learning hub was a buzz of excitement as the 5/6 buddies assisted their younger buddy with an activity learning a little bit more about each other.

 Talk for Writing

We're excited to share that we've kicked off our Narrative unit for the term, focusing on the timeless tale of "Little Red Riding Hood." Through our Talk for Writing approach, students are immersing themselves in the narrative, understanding its structure, and grasping key language elements. As they delve into the story, they're discovering the details of narration, from setting the scene to developing characters and unfolding the plot. We encourage you to engage with your child by asking them to retell the story, fostering their comprehension and storytelling skills. Together, let's embark on this literary journey, where imagination knows no bounds and every word becomes a stepping stone towards literacy mastery.

Maths

In Prep we are learning to count the numbers 1-10, show them as words and objects, and put them in order. Last week, students collected different objects around the school yard, and filled in their number template with all the different collected objects they found!

In Grade 1, students are honing their skills in number formation, mastering the art of writing numerals clearly and accurately. We’re also delving into skip counting, exploring patterns and sequences through counting by twos, fives and tens. Grade 1 is developing a foundational understanding of place value, focusing on tens and ones.
