From the Year 3 Classroom

What a lovely feeling to be in the last month of Winter with Spring just around the corner. The Year Three students are certainly enjoying this week's sunshine.
Reading-
This fortnight we have been summarising Non Fiction texts. We do this using the acronym TAMK.
T- text types and title
A- author and action
M- main idea
K- Key details
Summarising is an important skill to help us remember what we read. We use our own words which helps get the information into our long term memory.
We continue to read and enjoy our classroom text The Iron Man and identify the author- Ted Hughes’ literary devices that make his sentences interesting. So far, we have identified- Power of Three, alliteration, varied sentence length and imagery through the descriptive language he uses. This week’s vocabulary words we have reviewed are trembling, jolt, deceive, dense, gleamed and endlessly. See if your child can verbalise these words in a sentence!
PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILD IS READING AT HOME A MINIMUM OF 1 HOUR PER WEEK!
Writing
Students are deep into researching an animal for their information reports. With a focus on researching and notetaking students have been gathering information on the animal's size & appearance, habitat & lifestyle and diet & eating habit. Research continues this week on the animal’s breeding habits and young. Once all research is complete students will be writing the report from note form into their words before publishing.
Mathematics
Weeks 2 and 3 students are exploring angles for the first time. They’re learning to recognise angles as turns and compare them to right angles, using real-life examples. While they’ll be introduced to the term “right angle,” measuring in degrees will come later. This unit builds important foundations for future geometry learning.
RE
We continue our unit on Parables of Jesus. So far, we have explored the Parable of the Lost Sheep and Parable of the Sower.
Thanks to all families who attended the Reconciliation Information session last Wednesday. It was great to have so many in attendance. Thanks to Father Jun Jun, Mrs McInnes, Mr Mullavey & Ms Bridgeman for their guidance with the preparation of this special Sacrament.
Inquiry
We continue our new History Unit – The Mystery of Australia’s History, focusing on dreamtime stories and why the Europeans first settle in Australia. Our Grade 3 excursion to the Port of Echuca will be on Wednesday 3rd September. Please add this date to your diary.
Friendly Reminder: The expectation is that all students return their reading diaries each Friday so the teachers can check their home reading from throughout the week. Students are expected to complete 60 minutes of home reading each week and return their diaries each Friday. The reading can be done over several days, but the expectation is 60 minutes of reading. Students who do not return their diary and complete their 60 minutes of reading (without a legitimate reason), will need to catch up on their weekly reading during Fun Friday.
