From the Year 2 Classroom

Week 3 already!!!! Thank goodness we have been seeing some warmer weather, and the children are not so cold during the day.  We are seeing lots of jumpers being taken off, so please make sure they are clearly labelled so they can be boomeranged back to you if they are lost.  The children have been very settled and are well and truly back into their learning.

In Literacy we have continued to look at the reading skill, inferring.  When reading it is important to look at the text for clues and use our prior knowledge to help us understand who, what, where, why and how.  The children have been using this skill in writing tasks extremely well.  They have used clues to find out who stole the cookies from the cookie jar, clues to complete a what am I, clues about a messy kitchen or classroom and clues to figure out what happened to the characters. Next week we will begin a new reading skill of working out what the main idea of the text is.  To do this we need to look for repeated words and information.

We have thoroughly enjoying starting to read 'The Day the Crayons Came Home'.  This will continue next week in some reading and writing activities also.

On Monday we sent home a questionnaire for the children to fill out with members of their family.  We would appreciate if this can be returned on Friday so we can use it for a future writing activity.

In Maths we delved further into multiplication.  We have looked at arrays, arrays and more arrays.  The children have been learning about groups of, skip counting, repeated addition and how these come together to create a multiplication sentence.  The Year 2's loved explaining and showing their learning of this by completing think boards.  Next week we will build on this knowledge and begin the opposite, division.

In Inquiry we care continuing our learning of the past and present through reading a special book called 'My Place'.  This book takes us through particular decades and how places, people, clothes, food and areas can change drastically.

In Religion we are learning about the topic Jesus' Stories.  Over the next two weeks the children are working in partnerships and have chosen a story from the New testament to read and summarise.  They will then share an oral presentation to the rest of the class and explain what their story of Jesus is about.
