NETBALL

The girls got off to an early start with braids and a tub of lollies. A Team’s first game was nothing like they had expected coming home with a 22-1 win! B team also having a ripper with a thrilling game and a 1 goal win. The next few games, A team worked well together, bringing the ball down the court and scoring many goals! The defensive end worked hard, resulting in intercepts and a few more wins! The B teams next few games were the same, as they bonded on and off the court coming away with 2 more wins and 2 losses. Once the 5 rounds were over the girls waited suspensively for their acceptance into finals. Finally, the announcement was made and the A team girls cheered with excitement as they warmed up for their first final. The quarter final began, and the girls worked exceptionally well, winning the game and advancing to the Semi Final. Although the quarter final was easy, the semi was nothing like it! We fought hard and ended up winning by around five goals, making our way to the Grand Final! The first half was not the best that we had played and going into half time we were down by 2 goals. After some words of wisdom from the amazing coach, (Mrs.O’dwyer) the girls took the court and regained the lead! The girls worked well, fighting for the ball and applying pressure all along the court! Eventually the 8 minutes was up, and the final siren flared! All through the last half, the girls brought their all and ended up taking the win by 2 goals! It was an awesome adventure that the girls couldn’t have done any better! Well done!

SOCCER

By George Kennedy

On the 30th of July the years 5 and 6 took part in the Wangaratta Winter sports competition for soccer. They were blessed with a sunny day instead of the previous rain delay. Both teams had a bye for the first round, until they played each other in round two. The first half went by quietly. It was harder to control the ball due to the extremely muddy conditions though. The year fives quickly found the back of the net due to Ollie McDonald. So, the score was 1-0 at kick off in favour of the year fives. Year 6 was working greatly as a team to try and even things up, but the year fives were stopping all attacks. The year fives second goal came as rather unexpected as the goalkeeper threw the ball to another player after making a save resulting in a handball inside the box. The year fives then had a penalty kick and Sonny Nagle converted it off the deflection off the goalkeeper’s knee. The year fives now had more cushion leading by 2 goals with the clock running out. The match then ended with the year fives emerging victorious.

The year sixes had their second game not long after against Wandiligong. Coming off the back of a loss the year sixes were out for a win. And Cameron Wallace delivered with an amazing strike with immense power from outside the box. The year sixes leading 1-0 were not finished yet with William Cruikshank piling on the pressure and scoring not once but twice. Will Cruikshank then passed the ball unselfishly to George Kennedy. The score at 4-0. Not to mention the job that the defence was doing with Flynn Cox beating multiple opponents and William Kidgell booting the ball back into attack. Then George Kennedy completed a solo run for a goal. The whole team was playing amazing as Aaryun Jipu Krishnan making incisive passes and Lincoln Lay winning the ball and passing in quickly. Then Dallas Johnson scored a goal from a tight angle. George Kennedy then scored again to complete his hat trick. The final score was 7-0 in favour of year 6.

The year fives played Wandiligong and won comfortably……. The year sixes last game was against Wangaratta West. Matoaka Kemper open the scoring with an excellent left foot strike. Ziera Levesque and Ernie Inchbold were as solid as a rock in defence getting the loose ball often. 1-0 the score was and Alex Pepper who had made a performance in goalie was eager to score, and his wish was granted at a tight angle. The game then ended with year six winning 2-0.

Unlucky for year 6 their day had ended but the year fives had progressed to the finals. The played against Appin Park primary in the semi-final. Year 5 was put under pressure with the opposition scoring first. But they fought back valiantly with Sonny Nagle, Ethan Savage and others scoring. Danny Ryan was also keeping them in the game with save after save. The game ended in a comeback 5-1. Which meant that they were in the grand

final. The only thing in their way was St Patricks primary. Both teams had good players all over the ground, but their goalkeeper was very talented. Both teams attacked and defended with everything they had left but all the attacks were shut down by their goalie. The game ended with no team having an edge over the other which meant that it was a penalty shootout to determine the winner. Sonny Nagle scored his penalty, and Danny Ryan made a fantastic save. Lenny Robinson scored as well, and Danny saved it again to boost their lead. Then Ethan Savage scored his penalty. So, it was all up to Danny to save it, and he did, so the year fives won in penalties. They will play in the regional stage on Wednesday.

FOOTBALL

On Wednesday, 24 Sacred Heart boys from year 5 and 6 went to compete in the Wangaratta Winter sports. Out of the 24 boys 12 played in the B team and the other 12 made up the A team as they went through their first 3 games showing grit and determination. The boys from the A team had an impressive win over St Bernards B team. The 12 boys from the A team went to watch the B team play against St Pats. Then after their return to the designated ground they played their second game against Cathedral where the Yarra boys were challenged heading into half time a few goals down. Super Coach Mr Kennedy gave the boys some words of wisdom and they were able to bounce back scoring all the goals in the second half. The A team ended the game with another win. The B team had a 30-point win over Rutherglen. The A team played their 3rd game for the day against Benalla P-12 with another win ending the first 3 games undefeated. On the other oval the B team played off against Myrtleford ending the game with another loss finishing their 3 games with only 1 win. The A teams impressive first 3 matches gave them a spot in the finals while the B team did not advance. The A team played their semi- final against Saint Mary’s where they had another win. They travelled over to the other oval where they watched Saint Bernards A team have a win over Yarrawonga P-12. The sun was blearing by the time the Grand final was on Saint Bernards challenged the Sacred Heart Boys in the first half, they went into half time 2 goals down. The boys started the second half with intent and purpose starting the half with a bang. The Yarra boys hit the top and were desperate for the siren to go. Their prayers were answered, the siren blew, and the boys leaped in joy getting around everyone sharing this beautiful moment. This Friday they go to Benalla to compete for the top spot.
