From the Year 5 Classroom

It’s hard to believe we are already 3 weeks into the term!   Dates for your calendar - Wednesday 13th August – Pupil free day Monday 18th August – Excursion to Fruit Flying Circus Friday 22nd August – Lightning premiership Week 6 - Learning conversations Literacy - In Writing, students have been focussing on writing information reports on Convict Settlement in Australia. The information students are discovering derives from Jackie French’s book, “Thomas Appleby, Convict Boy”, as well as websites provided for students to take notes from. They have enjoyed learning about child convicts and the experiences some children went through when being sent to Australia. Maths - In the first two weeks, students focussed on adding and subtracting fractions with same and related denominators, using different strategies. Students have consolidated and built on previous learning about mixed numerals and improper fractions. Their knowledge and confidence grew throughout this period. We have now moved onto angles where students are using protractors to identify the size of angles. Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee - Today, all Year 5 students are bringing home a consent form to participate in the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee. Please complete consent forms and return to school asap. If you do not want your child to participate, we ask that you fill in their name only, write on the form that you do not want them taking part and return the form to school. The Spelling Bee is a fun way to practice spelling skills. Learning through play is always a winning formula. The Spelling Bee allows students to complete 30 spelling words in a fun format where they have to aim for accuracy, to beat the clock and finish ahead of their fellow students right across Australia. We are planning to complete practise questions next week with the actual school round taking place in Week 5. Only students who have returned a signed consent form are eligible to participate. All student who participate in the Spelling Bee receive a certificate of participation. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Sports - Well done to the Year 5 students who represented the school last week in football, netball and soccer. Good luck to our students who are playing soccer this Wednesday 6th August and footballers Friday 8th August.
