In the upcoming parent teacher interviews, the Science Exhibition will provide opportunities to celebrate and develop student successes in Environmental Science. At the end of Term 3, students had completed pretests for the Brain Unit. Following the Brain Unit, studies commenced with the Lobes of the Brain (frontal lobe for thinking, behaviours and emotions) and Hemispheres of the Brain (thinking vs. physical aspects of the brain).

Following the work on the Brain Unit, the class continued their studies on the nervous systems and neuron nerves of the body.  This connected to the previous topic of the brain and its key anatomy and functions, but with the purpose of how neurons are linked with the brain and nervous system as messengers, carriers and how they relay signals to and from the brain throughout the body system. This led to a week of researching through videos, interactives or hands on experiments to create and model the basic neuron model, as well as models of different and specialist types of neurons throughout the body system.

In terms of the sciences, the year 9 class has studied extensively this term the ideas behind chemistry, for instance, chemical reactions and acid-base reactions. Students created their own pH chart and used it to measure and indicate the pH of certain substances provided from the lab.

But to add to the excitement, we also had the Forensic Science teams who conducted investigations on a fictional crime scene and practiced applying steps in conducting a CSI-style investigation, including collecting evidence in the form of DNA and fingerprints. They did a fantastic job in testing out magnetic powder for fingerprinting!

Again, on behalf of the science team, we would like to pay our respects and acknowledge the cooperation all of our students for the time they have taken to create projects which made the Science, Forensic Science and Psychology classes so successful. We hope to achieve greater successes with the next group of students in 2024!!! 🙂

Here is to the rest of term and year!

Mr. Justin Wu.
