Principal's Report
Dear Parents and Carers,
A very warm welcome back to everyone after the mid-year break. We trust that the holiday period provided an opportunity for families to spend some quality time together and recharge the batteries in preparation for the term ahead. A special welcome to our new students and their families who are joining the Lucas PS community this term.
It has been wonderful to see students settle back into their learning routines so quickly and make a positive start to the term. Their enthusiasm and readiness to learn have been evident across the school as they embrace the many opportunities that lie ahead.
At last week's assembly, I spoke with students about the importance of continuing to work hard throughout the term and embrace the challenges that arise. Learning is not always easy and there will be times when students are stretched beyond their comfort zone. These moments provide valuable opportunities to demonstrate persistence, resilience and effective problem-solving strategies. It is through facing challenges that students develop the confidence and skills needed to achieve success.
We are incredibly fortunate to have a team of dedicated teachers who consistently go above and beyond to design engaging, purposeful and challenging learning experiences for every student. Their work is supported by our Education Support staff, who play an important role supporting students to achieve their personal best each day.
Parents and carers are equally important partners in this journey. Your encouragement, support and guidance help your child celebrate their successes while also navigating the bumps along the way.
A Busy Few Weeks Ahead
Please check the school term calendar for all the major events that we have planned over the next 8 weeks. In the coming weeks we have a number of significant events that have hopefully made it your diary. These include:
3 Way Conversations - This Thursday we look forward to sharing your child’s learning journey with you. Bookings have closed but you can contact your child’s teacher directly to organise a time to meet. Please remember we finish at the earlier time of 12.30pm on Friday.
Book Fair - Over the next three days, the annual Book Fair is taking place in the Admin Building. Students had a chance to visit the bookfair and I am sure they were keen to share some ideas with you over a dinner chat.
Grandparents/Special Friends Day - This Friday we welcome our grandparents and special friends to join us for an afternoon of activities. We are looking forward to celebrating the role these special people play in our lives.
Curriculum Day - Coming up on August 21, we have a Curriculum Day where staff will be continuing their learning about the Berry Street model. This is a part of our two-year commitment to further develop our knowledge of supporting student wellbeing at Lucas PS.
Father's Day - This is always a well-attended event each year to celebrate our fathers and father figures. This year’s event will be between 1.30-2.30pm on September 4.
NAPLAN Data
Over the past few weeks, families of students in Years 3 and 5 received their NAPLAN reports from the assessments undertaken earlier in the year. Each student received a report and explanation of how to read the NAPLAN report.
The results received are now being analysed to identify celebrations, challenges and future steps to support student learning and our teaching and learning programs.
Lucas PS continues to show strong results in all areas with results that are close to or above similar schools and state averages. Thank you to everyone who assisted the students to prepare for and work through the assessments back in May.
Year 3 and 4 Swimming
Over the past few weeks, our Year 3 and 4 students have been participating in their intensive swimming program at Shayne Reese Swimming Centre. The program has supported students to gain valuable water awareness, stroke development and water safety techniques and strategies. Well done to all students who have participated, and our appreciation goes to the staff for the organisation of the program.
Outside of School Hours Care - Appreciated Day
Today we celebrate Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) Educators Day, recognising the incredible dedication, care and creativity of our OSHC staff. These educators play a vital role in supporting children before and after school, creating safe, engaging and nurturing environments where students can learn, play and grow. Thank you for the positive impact our Lucas LEAP team make every day, they are truly appreciated and provide a vital service to the Lucas School community. Last night we paused to say thankyou to our Lucas LEAP team.
Playground Update
The playground is really starting to take shape and is now not too far away. I was lucky enough to have a tour of the worksite last week and I can see that students are really going to enjoy the natural play elements as well as the more structured apparatus. Over the coming weeks, the boulders will be in place along with the interactive play elements and decking which will bring the space to life. To finish off the space, the students and community will be invited in to assist with planting out the gardens.
Fundraiser
The fundraising team would like to share an exciting opportunity that will be launched in the coming weeks. As we develop our playground spaces, families have the opportunity to design and purchase a brick paver that will become a permanent part of our playground.
Next week students will have the opportunity to create a design for a brick which they will bring home. Parents will then have the opportunity to polish the design before choosing whether to be part of the fundraiser. We are looking forward to seeing what our creative students can design. Save the Date - Lucas Primary School Celebration of the Arts
The much anticipated and valued Celebration of the Arts is back again for 2026. Please save the date and invite family and friends to come and visit the art gallery to enjoy the creative genius of our students and Art Team.
