In the Kitchen with Chris

This week, Grade 2/3 made delicious Pumpkin, Chickpea  and Sage sausage rolls and Home-made Tomato Sauce and a creative Salad of the Imagination.

From the garden we used Spring Onions, Garlic, Sage, Silverbeet, Cavolo Nero, Parsley and Chives, Breakfast radishes, mizuna, coriander, limes and edible flowers  We also used the Butternut Pumpkin that had been blanched and frozen last term.

Emma’s group measured out the ingredients for the pastry, mixed the dough and kneaded it really well.

Chris's groups  made the filling.  They learnt how to prepare the silverbeet and Cavolo Nero and herbs by removing the stems and cutting the leaves finely.  Lily, Rosa and Ulla cut the onions and Cooper chopped up the Kale and Silverbeet.  Piper cut up the herbs and showed great skill cutting the parsley very finely.

After recess we worked in pairs to roll out the dough to the correct size and thickness.  It was great to see how well everyone worked together to make sure their dough was the correct shape and size.   They then had to carefully added the correct amount of filling to make 2 long sausage rolls, roll them up and cut their roll into 6 pieces.

The Salad of the Imagination was made by Thea and her group. The salad included the French Breakfast radishes, mizuna, coriander and edible flowers. The dressing was made with lime, vinegar mint, chives.

As we cooked, Koby did a great job of  co-ordinating the washing and putting away of the all the  dishes.

Rui and Sidney and Owen picked the flowers and arranged them for the table.

Grade 2/3 enjoyed the food they made and they worked out they made 96 sausage rolls.  They were so delicious, we ate them all!

We expressed our gratitude for the food they made and discussed what they thought as we shared the food.

Henry said he didn’t think he’d like the rolls and the sauce but he loved it

Owen, commented “100% to my taste I loved it so much. I made the dough with Emma’s group.”

Cooper said “The rolls are very nice but the salad wasn’t to my taste.”

Alfie commented, “Vegetables are my worst enemy but these rolls and the sauce are my best friend. I think I had 7 ! “

Sidney said, “I ate 10 they were so good”
