Cyber Safety Update

A Guide to Online Bullying for Parents and Carers

This week the Year 1-6 students have participated in an eSmart lesson. Being eSmart - smart, safe & responsible, is something we model each day. We also at regular intervals throughout the year  teach explicit lessons. Below is a summary of the different aspects of cyber safety the students have been looking at.

The Year 1 students have participated in a lesson called Follow the Digital Trail. Students learn that the information they put online leaves a digital footprint or “trail”.

This trail can be big or small, helpful or hurtful, depending on how they manage it.

By following the “trail” of two fictional characters, students can reflect on the amount of information available and whether it is safe or not. Check out the family tip sheet for further information.

The Year 2 students will be learning how to be kind and respectful to others when they are online. They will watch a short ‘Mighty Hero’s’ video which focuses on River the sugar glider, whose superpower is ‘Respect’, teaching Billie and their friends how to be respectful online. Students will explore scenarios of when they or other students might need support. They will discuss what they can do to help someone who is receiving mean messages online, who they can tell if they see someone being mean to another student online and how they know when they need to ask for help. Remember, everyone has feelings. Be kind and respect people online.

With so much information at our fingertips, Year 3 students will students learn what it means to "give credit" when using content they find online. Taking on the role of a detective, students learn why it's important to give credit and the right ways to do it when they use words, images, or ideas that belong to others.

The Year 4 students will investigate how to create positive online communities. They will establish group norms to create helpful online communities that promote responsible and respectful digital behaviour.

There is Family Tip sheet below for further information.

The Year 5 students will watch a video aimed at highlighting potential dangers of communicating online. The video makes links between what giving out personal information online looks like in the real world. Students in the video agree that they would not give a stranger a photograph of themselves, but then post personal photos online. The video highlights this gap between what we know is safe/unsafe and our actions.

The Year 6 students will investigate cyberbullying in order to develop an understanding of the associated behaviours and impact on others. The activities provide practical strategies to assist young people to deal with cyberbullying behaviour and where to seek support.

This video looks at several different experiences of cyberbullying and what you can do if your child is being cyberbullied.
