AUSTRALIAN POLLINATOR WEEK

PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

Last Wednesday night I attended an online Webinar run by Wheen Bees. The judges James Dorey, Entomologist, Photographer and lecturer, Bridgette Gower, Aussie Macros Photos and Sophie Mc Donald, Flow Hive shared favourite photos they took in various parts of Australia of bees and pollinators. James took night shots of roosting and masked bees. Bridget had taken photos of bees in the Cairns Botanic Gardens and runs morning and night walks for photographers. Sophie’s favourite bee is the blue bandit and native teddy bear bee. She shared a photo of them working together to collect pollen from flowers.

This year over one hundred schools including Naranga School had entries in the pollinator photography competition. Judges looked at all the photos then shortlisted them. They judged the photos on lighting, depth of field, focus and interesting subject matter. Apollo Bay P-12 college in Victoria and Helena Valley P.S. in Western Australia won. We are proud of our Pathways Sustainability students Holly, Storm and Ryan who participated in this competition for the first time. Thank you to Cristina Solomon for helping them with their

RECYCLING BLISTER PACKS

Staff and students are doing an excellent job putting finished blister packs into the new recycling box in the sick bay. Kristina collected a full box of seventy-three blister packs. Sustainability staff will take turns to take the full box to Chemist Warehouse for recycling. At the recycling centres the aluminium and plastic gets sorted and separated. Aluminium collected will go to manufacturers to make new furniture, and the plastic sent to be melted down to make new shipping containers. Our actions are helping to keep blister packs out of landfill. Great work everyone!

Congratulations to Junior Malcolm students for winning this week’s Sustainability star award. This class is making a conscious effort to put used pens and whiteboard markers into their recycling box for Officeworks recycling program. They are doing a fabulous job of keeping pens and whiteboard markers out of landfill.
