Keeping you informed

Thinking outside the box (inside the box!)

St Patrick's College teacher Shane Armstrong came up with a novel way of teaching his Year 7 Science class about the difference phases of the moon this week.

Mr Armstrong moved the class into the Black Box Theatre in our new Performing Arts Centre for a truly immersive lesson.

Using a spotlight as the sun, a soccer ball as the moon and a piece of pipe, students could see how the sun's light creates the different shapes of the moon that we see each night, such as a full moon and waxing crescent.

The students were suitably impressed with the hands-on learning experience as were we! Fantastic to see the Performing Arts Centre being used as a learning space outside of the arts!

Swing by Student Services and have a look - you might just be reunited with your long-lost belongings.

Year 12 student Ned Renfree was part of the Aussie basketball team that travelled to Germany in the holidays to compete in the Albert Schweitzer Cup. Ned and his teammates held off Serbia 71-65 to claim the Cup. We asked Ned the hard questions upon his return!

How would you describe the experience?

NR: It was a humbling experience to be able to travel the world with sport and have the opportunity to broaden my horizons to places afar.

What does it mean to you to represent Australia at this level?

NR: It's tough to sum up what it means to me but to be able to have my name in the history books of athletes that represented Australia is again super humbling as I feel unworthy of such recognition.

What did you take away from the experience?

NR: The difference between international basketball and Australian basketball — overseas is so much more physical and overall tougher to play in.

What’s next for you and your basketball?

NR: I'm looking forward to heading to College next year in the United States. At this point in time, I'm currently uncommitted but am looking at a few schools.

Canteen volunteers needed

Do you have some free time and a willingness to help in the College Canteen? If so, we would love to hear from you!

Prior to Covid-19, we had a long list of Canteen volunteers, but unfortunately this number has dropped off significantly in recent years.

Canteen duties include serving students, basic food preparation, handling a small amount of cash and using an EFTPOS machine. We provide support and guidance in all areas.

Volunteers require a current Working with Children Check, and need to complete a brief induction, which we assist you with once you have registered your interest.

The Canteen cannot operate without the support of volunteers and we thank you for considering joining our wonderful community.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call our Canteen Manager Jo on 0447 194 218 or 5322 4481. Please note, if you are already on the Canteen volunteer list, you do not need to re-register.
