Junior School

Mr Tom Nash, Head of Junior School

I hope that you have had a good week and that your son is enjoying his time in the Junior School. I encourage you to reach out to your child’s Homeroom Teacher, Year Level Coordinators or myself to discuss any matters regarding your son's schooling.

It’s been another big fortnight for our Year 7 and 8 students. Below are some highlights from the past two weeks.

Summer Sport and Congress Assembly

The Junior School assembled in the Performing Arts Centre on Thursday to recognise the individual contributions our students have made to the sport program as well as present the badges to the students who are on the Student Congress for 2024.

Congratulations to Year 7 Athletics Champion Joseph Knobel and Year 8 Athletics Champion Brandan Triangolo. Your efforts at our Athletics Carnival were outstanding and you are both very worthy title holders.

During the assembly, we also recognised our Year 8 Student Congress leaders for 2024 and I congratulate the following students who will represent the Year 8 cohort on Congress this year: Jack Stringer, Tadhg Kiely, Aayush Ahlawat, Oliver Ashmore, Ujjwal Gambhir, George Muller and Aidan Ellul.

Lastly, congratulations to the following Year 8 students who have been appointed Year 8 House Leaders for 2024:

Galvin - Oliver Ashmore, Zac Dyson and Lawson Goodall

Nunan - Tadhg Kiely and Blair McClelland

Ryan - Jack Stringer, Edward Weyers and Venuk Gajanayake

Keniry - Aayush Ahlawat, Jagger Walter-Powell and Harry McArthur

Diaries

In Week 1, the Year 7 and 8 students have been encouraged to use their student diaries more effectively and the boys have been shown how to do this. I’ve been working my way through each Homeroom (starting with 7A) to check how the boys are setting their diaries up. The boys have been instructed to:

  • Write each subject in that they have for each day of the week in the “subject” space
  • In the appropriate space, write down the homework that they are getting for that particular subject
  • Add in important events and other notes. For example, Edmund Rice Day, Assemblies, what days they have Health rather than PE etc.

The improvement in using the student diary will take time, however I’m hopeful that it sets a good foundation for the years to come for our students at St Pat's. Homeroom teachers, Year Level Coordinators and I will continue to monitor and support the boys in using this resource as best as possible. Parents and Caregivers should expect their child to bring their diary home each night so that homework tasks can be sighted.

GRIT Award: Round 4

Congratulations to the following students who were nominated for the GRIT Award by their Homeroom Teacher this past fortnight. A reminder that GRIT is the combination of passion and perseverance. GRIT can come easier to some than others, however everyone can learn how to become more “gritty” – this has been evident since this initiative began. Well done to this round's recipients:

Recognising our Junior Schoolers

Thank you to those parents and caregivers who have shared news of their son's achievements. Whether it's success in the arts, sports triumphs or community contributions, we want to celebrate all accomplishments.

Please share his milestones with us and let's inspire the College community together.

Please email me tnash@stpats.vic.edu.au with your news so we can ensure our students receive the recognition they deserve!
