EARTH DAY    MONDAY 22ND APRIL

Pathways students have been busy this week in Sustainability making seed shapes from recycled shredded paper and seeds collected from the kitchen garden. Lower Junior classes will celebrate Earth Day by taking these seed shapes home to plant them in the garden.

First shred paper and soak in warm water for 30 minutes. Using gloves, break up the strips to form a pulp. Squeeze out the water then add food dye and mix. Spread the pulp on baking paper on a wooden board or plastic sheet. Lay another towel over the top and press to absorb the water. Place a cutter on another prepared workspace and pack pulp pieces tightly into the shape then carefully remove the cutter to reveal the shape. Press seeds into the middle of the shape. Leave to completely dry out. Find a sunny place without too many trees or large plants that gets regular water. The paper will break down and the seeds begin to sprout. You can also make seed cards this way to share what you grow.
