Year Two Team: Drew (Leader), Bec, Ella, Lisa & Trang
The Grade 2 team is extremely excited to have welcomed students back and into Grade 2 for 2026.
The grade 2 teachers this year are Drew, Bec, Trang, Ella and Lisa. We are all really excited for the year and can report that all students have had a positive start to the term, settling well into their new classrooms, routines, and expectations. We are looking forward to meeting with you all next week for the Meet the Teacher forums to find out more about your child, their needs and how we can best support them to have a successful year.
Literacy
The Little Learners Love Literacy program will continue in grade two with a focus on decoding, fluency and comprehension. Grade 2 students will build their reading stamina and analyse texts to answer comprehension questions. They will practise spelling words using their learned understanding of phoneme-grapheme correspondences. We will work toward developing a deeper understanding of nouns, verbs and adjectives, as well as more complex sentence structures to allow students to write more detailed sentences and written pieces. Throughout the term students will retell experiences from their own lives as well as creatively exploring their five senses through their Writers Notebook. Students will develop their speaking and listening skills by voicing cares, concerns and compliments. They will be encouraged to engage in group discussions by listening and contributing their ideas and opinions.
Readers will begin at the end of week three and we ask that you please listen to your child read each day. These readers focus on fluency and are books that students are able to read confidently, aiming to consolidate in class learning from the previous weeks. These books will be one or two levels below what we are reading in class to allow students to focus on fluency without decoding new words. Don’t forget that the Nessy online subscription is also a great way for your child to rehearse literacy concepts taught at school.
Numeracy
Please see the separate newsletter post in last week two’s newsletter for more information about our exciting new Numeracy program at FWPS!
Units of Knowledge
In Term One, students will spend time getting to know their peers and teachers alongside our Respectful Relationships and Berry Street program. Students will revisit the importance of showing mutual respect to one another and to resources, share their appreciations, and show attentive listening. Students will also learn the meaning of applying their personal best effort and the importance of participating in all learning tasks. We will also build students' knowledge around our four school values of Responsibility, Respect, Resilience, and Belonging.
Wellbeing
In our Respectful Relationships and Body Safety lessons, students will be looking at emotional literacy, personal strengths, bodily autonomy, consent and our safety networks. If you would like further information about Respectful Relationships, please see the Department of Education Website.
Friendly Reminders
Students require a bucket hat/wide-brim hat during this term. We would greatly appreciate donations of tissue boxes for your child’s classroom (thank you to those who have already donated). Please refer to the Dates to Remember in the Newsletter to stay up to date with events this term.
If you have any questions, you can contact your child’s teacher using the email button through Compass.
We look forward to working with all of our Grade Two families!
Kind regards,
Drew, Bec Trang, Ella and Lisa
