Positive learning habits

The term has continued with a generally positive and purposeful tone, with many students demonstrating an increasingly mature approach to their schooling. As reinforced through recent assemblies, a strong approach to school is built on consistent habits such as arriving prepared, engaging fully in lessons and committing to the small but important routines that underpin success.

Middle School students were fortunate to hear from Mr James Couzens, alongside Year 11 students Archer Martin, Joseph Buckle and Angus Lester, at their respective assemblies, where they spoke about their approach to learning. Importantly, their message was not that they are exceptional or different to others, but rather that their success has been shaped by a commitment to making small, consistent improvements and working hard over time.

We thank Mr Couzens, Archer, Joseph and Angus for their support of the Middle School program and for sharing this important insight. Their presentation continues to be referenced by both staff and students, highlighting the impact of their message and its relevance to daily learning.

Encouragingly, many boys are already demonstrating growth in these areas, showing an increasing capacity to engage positively with their learning and take greater ownership of their progress. For others, developing greater consistency in effort, organisation and independence remains an important focus. When students commit to these foundations, they place themselves in a far stronger position to maximise both their learning and overall school experience.

As we move toward the end of semester assessment period, this message becomes increasingly important. The upcoming weeks provide an opportunity for all students to demonstrate the habits discussed in our assemblies, particularly in their approach to revision and preparation. Importantly, performance during this period will reflect not only the work completed in the lead up, but also the way students utilise their time from now until assessments commence.

For those who may find revision challenging or who feel they have not yet approached this period with the required diligence, there is still time to reset and take positive steps forward. Establishing a simple and consistent routine, seeking support from teachers, and engaging in practical strategies such as reviewing notes and completing practice questions can make a meaningful difference. Small, deliberate efforts made each day will build confidence and better position students to demonstrate their learning.

Also approaching is the Year 9 Social, held in partnership with Loreto College, which remains a feature of the Middle School calendar. Students have now completed their third rehearsal, with one remaining on Monday ahead of the event on Wednesday, 3 June. The level of participation across the Year 9 cohort has been outstanding, with over 160 St Patrick’s College students registered. This strong engagement reflects the positive culture within the cohort and the willingness of students to embrace opportunities that build confidence, connection and a sense of community.

We were also pleased to reintroduce the Year 7 Music Performance for students in 7A through to 7E. This event provided a fantastic opportunity to see our students in a different setting, and for many, it represented their first experience performing on stage.

The process of preparing for and presenting a performance in front of an audience is a significant achievement, requiring courage, practice and perseverance. We thank staff for their organisation of the concert and acknowledge the pride with which students approached the occasion, particularly given this is a program that has not been held since 2019.

Student Shout-outs

There have also been a number of excellent individual achievements worth recognising. Year 9 student Bailey Jarvis is to be commended for his initiative, persistence and community-minded approach in advocating for the development of a pump track in Haddon. Over a three-year period, Bailey demonstrated outstanding leadership, engaging with local council, state representatives and the wider community, ultimately contributing to the recent announcement of $200,000 in state government funding for the project. This is a significant achievement and reflects the power of student voice when combined with determination and follow-through.

In addition, Year 9 student Tyson Green was awarded Best on Ground representing the Eddie Betts All Stars, a terrific achievement that highlights both his talent and commitment.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Charlie Clarke has also been recognised at a state level, earning selection in the Under 14 School Sport Victoria Football team, following his earlier selection in the Under 12 side, an outstanding accomplishment.

We value hearing from students and families when personal successes occur beyond the classroom, as this allows us to acknowledge and celebrate these achievements more broadly within our College community. Families are always encouraged to make contact so that these moments can be recognised and shared.

Overall, there is much to be encouraged by across the Middle School. By maintaining a consistent approach to their learning, embracing the habits outlined in our assemblies and engaging fully in the opportunities available to them, students are well placed to navigate the upcoming assessment period with confidence and to continue building the foundations for future success, both within and beyond the classroom.
