AEU - STOP WORK ACTION TOMORROW - THURSDAY 23rd July - No school

Dear Parents and Carers

Tomorrow, Thursday 23 July 2026, Australian Education Union members will participate in a statewide 24 hour stop work in pursuit of a revised government offer that addresses the concerns of union members in relation to workloads, salaries and full funding of government schools.

Based on the information provided to me, most of our leadership, teaching, and education support staff are participating in this action and consequently we will not be able to run any programs as normal for all our students. 

In addition to this we have several staff who are on leave or will be attending our 2026 Year 5/6 ski camp. This has further limited our ability to provide staff to supervise students. 

The school can only provide supervision for students of critical services workers. We will have a capacity limit to ensure duty of care ratios are maintained.

Parents of children in all classes are asked to make alternative arrangements for the care and supervision of their child on the day of the stop work.

Parents who are unable to make alternative arrangements for the care and supervision of their children on the day of the stop work are asked to inform the school as soon as possible.

Assistant Principal Update

It is wonderful to welcome everyone back after a restful and refreshing mid-year break. We are straight back into the swing of things, and it has been terrific to see students return engaged and ready for another exciting term of learning.

Learning Walks: A Focus on Mathematics

Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to visit classrooms during our first Learning Walk of the semester. It was fantastic to see learning routines quickly re-established and classrooms buzzing with activity.

During Semester 1, our Learning Walks were primarily held on Thursday mornings with a focus on literacy. This semester, they will move to Wednesday and Thursday sessions after the first break, with a focus on mathematics. Learning Walks provide a valuable opportunity for staff to gain insights into teaching and learning across the school, celebrate the engagement and collaboration of our APS students, and see the impact of our team meetings and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in action.

Ski Camp

This week has also been an exciting one for our senior students, staff and parent helpers who are attending Ski Camp. Back at school, the Bourke Street live webcam has been getting plenty of attention as we try to spot some familiar APS faces on the slopes! We look forward to hearing all about their adventures when they return.

Upcoming Events and Important Dates

Year 3–6 Athletics Carnival – Tuesday 28 July 

Our annual Athletics Carnival will be held at Harriers Track in Collingwood. This is always a highlight of the school year, with students participating in a range of track and field events. Natalie and our Sport Captains have been busy preparing and we are all looking forward to a fantastic day. We always appreciate the support of parents, carers and grandparents who come along to cheer on our students.

Prep 100 Days of School – Friday 31 July 

Our Prep students will celebrate their 100th day of school. This milestone is always a special occasion, and we look forward to seeing the creative and fun ways our youngest learners mark the day.

3-Way Student Conferences – Wednesday 5 August

We are currently preparing for our 3-Way Student Conferences, which are to run from approximately 11.45am to 7:30pm.  

These conferences provide a wonderful opportunity for students to share their learning achievements and progress with their families. Teachers will support students in selecting pieces of work they are proud of and that showcase their learning journey.

A few important reminders:

• Bookings: Please make your booking through Compass.
• Attendance: Students are not required at school for regular classes on this day and should attend only for their scheduled conference time.

• TheirCare: TheirCare will be available throughout the day for families requiring care arrangements. Please book directly with TheirCare.
